Tonight, we'll spend All Hallows' Eve at Bramblecote, a thatched cottage above the water meadows, where a kind old village witch and her new apprentice bottle the last of the autumn by the fire.
Elspeth crosses the footbridge at dusk to help Aunt Hester for the first time. She draws water from the well, combs elderberries into a bowl and watches the winter syrup simmer while the mist comes up to the windows. They light a candle in every window downstairs, and Elspeth stays the night in the loft under the thatch. Nothing much happens.
There's gentle, homely magic here: a kettle that warms itself, a jar of kept moonlight. This is a cosy Halloween, not a scary one, told in a calm, slow voice. The story and affirmations last about 37 minutes, then soft music carries on for about three hours in all. At 11 minutes the screen fades to black, so the room stays dark while you sleep.
