00:00Lance Reisland on the wise heart, right? We make it right. Call Kyle, right? Hotline goodness.
00:05It's not the other animals we're having on today. I was thinking about whether I was going to let
00:08that one comment slide. And I did coach. Welcome to the show. What's going on guys. Happy Monday.
00:14All right. Happy Monday. Brown's victory Monday here. What's a cooler name, BJ or Melvin?
00:21I figured you were going to ask me that I'm going to go with, uh, I can't go with BJ
00:24there's,
00:25I mean, and you know why, but I'm going to go, I'm going to go Mel shorted down to Mel,
00:28but
00:28one of my favorite, one of my best players I ever had coaching was a guy named Melvin
00:32fellow. So I'm going to go melt. I'm going to go Mel Melvin. Uh, you just can't go BJ.
00:38There's just no way. Yeah. BJ fellows is a completely different name there. All right.
00:42Let's get to, uh, some people are saying it's not sustainable. All right. It's not real in
00:49terms of what you saw yesterday. What can you actually take away from that kind of ugly win
00:53that the Browns had over the Ravens? Well, first of all, there's no such thing as an ugly
00:57win, uh, ever. Uh, so I will say that. So yes, is it sustainable? I will, I would argue
01:02that, uh, yes, if playing great defense, uh, playing really good on special teams, playing
01:07complimentary, uh, all three phases and being opportunistic on offense. I absolutely think
01:12that's sustainable. Now, do I think that, uh, the offense needs to be more consistent?
01:16Absolutely. But what they're doing right now is winning football games. So, uh, the idea
01:21that there has to be room for improvement, of course there does, but yes, this is very sustainable
01:25because, uh, they're, they're pretty good on the defensive line. Offense line is getting
01:29better, but this is a physical football team, uh, that plays really high level defense and
01:34they scheme things up very well. Uh, yeah, I think sustainable and I think it's only going
01:38to get better in my opinion.
01:39It's going on with Harold Fannin, uh, another week, another, just one catch, uh, nine yards.
01:45I think they, they've actually changed the, uh, the promo we were running here to reflect
01:49of, uh, Harold Fannin receiving yards. Cause it was not nearly enough of a discount for
01:53the people that wanted new tires coach.
01:56Well, I will say this first of all, uh, it's hard. It's like, it's like a receiver. He's
01:59not a pass catcher. He's a tight end. So that's the first thing. Now everybody will say, well,
02:03he's brought in the NFL. Well, for him to get open, uh, the more he can block, the better
02:07it will be. And, and obviously you don't want him to block all the time, but if he can get
02:11regular personnel in the game, three, three, uh, three linebackers and a basic two high safeties,
02:16he's going to get the matchup if he wants. If he can just block a little bit. And I
02:19think that's what they're, they're trying to do. Deshaun Watson has been a little
02:22bit late in the middle of the field. Uh, if you're asking where he struggled, in my
02:26opinion, it's been a little, especially early on across the middle of the field in that 12
02:30to 15 yard range, but that's where he struggled. Um, you know, and then he's got to win some
02:34matchups. He's got to be a little bit better. They got to scheme them up a little bit better.
02:38Um, you know, they got to help them a little bit better. They, he's got, there's a bunch
02:41of things can happen, but if you look, for example, you know, there's much more touches
02:45and impact are really different. So when I look at one, I hit a better plays yesterday
02:49was a 33 yard touch, uh, play to Jerry Judy. People are like, how is that? Uh, well, they
02:53were in a cover too. Uh, Hamilton was on, uh, was on Harold, uh, Harold runs the seam route.
02:59And in that cover too, that that's linebacker. Hamilton was in the nickel dime, um, linebacker.
03:05He had to carry Fannin all the way deep. So Fannin took Hamilton and he took the two other
03:10safeties. So he took three that opened up the dig route. And so sometimes that impact
03:15is not felt, uh, just because he's not getting the touches. And for me, uh, you know, we're
03:20in week six, I don't think it's time to panic, but the bottom line is they're winning and whatever
03:24the Browns are doing well, uh, teams are going to attack. And then you have an answer because
03:29now your tight end hasn't been involved. You're going to get him involved. Uh, you know, how
03:33do you do that? Well, maybe you have to play a little bit more nickel that should help
03:35the run game. So there's a lot of things that carry over to this balance that they're looking
03:39for. Uh, but his impact has been, it's very similar to Jared Burst on the defensive
03:43side of the ball. Sacks don't give you the total impact. Same thing as a tight end.
03:47Sometimes, uh, you know, as a tight end touches, aren't the total impact. So he, he's still
03:53playing very, very well. Uh, his touches will come as, as teams start taking away Boston and
03:57Judy and Concepcion, et cetera.
04:00All right. So with that said, Daryl Johnson, the analyst for the game on Fox yesterday, kept
04:05saying, uh, that, you know, Deshaun Watson keeps looking down the field, but these guys are
04:10covered up where, where Brown's receivers open yesterday. Was that the problem with
04:15the offense?
04:17Well, there was, there was, I would say both, right? There was, I, there was some, so one
04:21of the things I would say leading into the game, they were very, uh, easy kind of to, uh,
04:27break down on their coverages, what they ran against certain formations. They showed a lot
04:30of too high shell and they did a lot of things out of it where they were rolling safeties up.
04:34They were, they were dropping linebackers. They were, uh, they had Hamilton as the nickel
04:38dime linebacker. They were doing some different things and I'm not sure if you didn't see
04:42it. Uh, but you know, that tight window and there, there's a fine line, right? There's
04:46a, uh, one of the things he's doing really well is protecting the football and you want
04:50him to rip those. And if he's seeing it on film and he missed it, great. Uh, I, yes,
04:54I think there was when people say, uh, I lean towards more that they were covered, but he
04:59is late. If once again, if I, to Harold Fannin, to be honest with you, that's where he's
05:03missing some of those throws early on. And I don't know if it's early on in the
05:07script that he's not getting in the coverage. Cause really that's what it is. They're running
05:11that first initial script. They're running a play against the coverage. They think they're
05:14going to see Ravens did a really nice job of kind of mixing that up. And you know, then
05:19he had Hamilton on him who adds great length and Hamilton was taking the inside away cause
05:22he had help over top with the safety and things of that nature. But again, they took
05:26it away. They took him away on the third down and five that opened Jerry Judy up. So, uh,
05:31yeah, I would lean more towards, um, he, they didn't get tremendous separation, but they
05:36were also keeping things in front of them and not giving many vertical looks yesterday.
05:40So, uh, you take what you got bottom eyes, you want, there's lots of room for improvement,
05:43but they won. And that's the key. All right. Last week, the jets turned Braylon Allen into
05:48Walter Payton. What happened this week where Derek Henry was basically just stopped. He looked
05:53good early on, but, uh, the final line, he averaged three and a 3.4 yards per carry. And
05:59obviously had the major fumble. What did the Browns do? That was so right about one of the
06:03games best in Derek Henry. Well, you know, here's the thing that they do very well,
06:07regardless of how they play, regardless of how they tackle, there's two things they do
06:10really, really well. They play very physical and they play very fast. And those things will
06:16kind of mask a lot of things sometimes. So, uh, the week before against Braylon Allen,
06:20they didn't tackle very well, but they didn't have great cap integrity. And that's that kind
06:24of when, you know, coaches use the coach talk of staying connected. That means you have,
06:27everybody's got a gap, ABCD gap, both sides. Everybody's got a gap. Everybody's got to do
06:32their job and, you know, they haven't tackled very well. So the idea, if I'm not tackling
06:36very well, well, five of us will tackle very well. And that's kind of what it was yesterday.
06:40It was the idea after that first drive, uh, they had a couple gap things that they needed
06:44to work out and things like that. But really for me, it just comes down to, they had really
06:48good gap integrity, but they play really physical at the point of attack and they rally to the
06:53football. When you stop the film, when the Browns play, and I do this all the time, you see
06:58five, six, seven hats in the frame. And that's so important for a defense when you're playing
07:02it back, like, uh, Derek Henry, cause he's going to break tackles. And if he's going to
07:06break one tackle, where's your buddy? And that's kind of what the theme was yesterday, especially
07:10after that first drive where he had a ton of success is they, they crowded the line scrimmage
07:14just a little bit more. They took away some easy passes, but they rallied to the football.
07:18Uh, and then Carson Swessinger makes up for a lot of people's, um, um, if anybody's not
07:23gap sound, he'll help you there. So again, there's a lot of schematics you can get into JP,
07:27but it just really, they just played really hard and that's what they consistently do. They play
07:31fast and physical. When I think of Lance Reisland, I think of gap sound, uh, coach,
07:37great stuff. We'll talk to you next week. I appreciate you guys. See ya. Lance Reisland
