00:00On the Wiseheart Wright, we make it right, call Kyle Wright Hotline,
00:04Cleveland.com and 92.3 The Fan, Browns Analyst, Coach Riz, Lance Reisland
00:09joining us right now. Coach, welcome to the show.
00:11What's up, Coach?
00:12What's going on, guys? Happy Monday to you.
00:14I got to tell you, Coach, you walked into the lion's den, okay?
00:17Because he's already pissed off at Ken.
00:18He's going at the morning show, and now we're just continuing the segment of feuds.
00:22And so now you're next up on the docket.
00:24Don't take it personally. I know you won't, but you've got some gripes.
00:27Absolutely. I feel like I've pulled my punches more with you, Coach, than JP has.
00:32Not in like a fighty way, but like JP pushes back.
00:34I feel like you push back harder on him than I do.
00:37Oh, no, I do, but you seem like you're really setting up there.
00:40Oh, yeah, yeah. I am ready.
00:41You're setting up for like a big push here.
00:42Coach, you're wrong about Mason McCormick.
00:44Yeah, I'm going to disagree with you wholeheartedly.
00:47And I will respect your – you know, here's the thing.
00:50When you're doing extra point field goal, you keep that outside foot planted.
00:54You step inside. Everybody jumps. You knock them down.
00:57And that's the reality of football.
00:59So that's why you don't see a lot of guys jumping because usually they –
01:03you know, he got it off easy because usually when you talk to Pinkston,
01:06he'll tell you they're usually going to hit you where you don't like to be hit
01:09when you jump.
01:10So he got off fairly easy, in my opinion.
01:12You can't jump because that's what ends up happening.
01:14So, no, not dirty whatsoever.
01:17Just my thoughts.
01:18I respect yours, though.
01:19I mean, you're wrong, but I respect it.
01:21All right, so why was it flagged?
01:26Well, I think it was the intent, like the finish.
01:28Like I think it was because how he, you know –
01:33Spiked him into the ground like a long dart?
01:35Yeah, it was a little emphatic.
01:37And I think maybe because there was a little bit of history there
01:41and all those kind of things.
01:42But once again, that's a penalty.
01:44I'll be honest with you, that's a penalty to your take
01:45because you got to make sure your extra points don't get blocked.
01:47There are certain penalties you go, okay, let's not do this anymore.
01:51But you'll take that one.
01:53Coach, could one say if you were flagged for it –
01:57and again, you used a human lawn dart analogy here –
02:02if it was flagged, then it is dirty by virtue of the rules.
02:06Which at least at a minimum unnecessary.
02:09I just don't think so.
02:11I mean, I understand what the rules state, but I just don't think so.
02:14I think sometimes in football you have to make a point.
02:17It's kind of like an unwritten rule, right?
02:19That's an unwritten rule in football.
02:20You don't jump on extra point field goal or that happens.
02:23And, you know, when you talk to all those guys, Joe and all those guys,
02:27they will tell you that's an unwritten rule.
02:29Can't do it.
02:29So it won't happen again.
02:32You know, he'll make sure he doesn't jump again
02:33because that's what they're taught, really.
02:35That's honestly what they're taught.
02:36All right, Coach, let's get into Deshaun Watson here.
02:39How do you grade Deshaun when the offensive line has a game as bad as it does?
02:43Are you capable of doing that?
02:44Is there things you can take away?
02:45Or do you just say he didn't have much of a chance and we call it a wash?
02:49Well, I don't think, you know, once again, just like when they play great,
02:52he has his hand in it.
02:53And just like when they play terrible, he also has his hand in it.
02:56You know, he missed a couple out routes that were easy.
02:58Here's what ends up happening is that when you get that type of pressure,
03:01I think your, you know, I think his clock is speeding up.
03:04And when your clock speeds up, you end up getting off balance.
03:07You end up not transferring your weight.
03:09Your fundamentals aren't very good.
03:10And that's something you have to, you have to assume every single time
03:13you're going to get great pass protection.
03:15Now, it's really hard to do because they're not pass protecting great.
03:18But again, once he had his hand in it, but it is tough because the offensive line,
03:22they're not running the football.
03:23And the bottom line is in football, both sides of the ball, evaluation of everybody.
03:27When you get handled physically in the trenches, you got no chance.
03:33And that's really what, I mean, there's what everybody's saying about the running backs
03:36and receivers and linebackers.
03:38All that's very true, but if you get controlled inside, you got no chance.
03:41And that's what happened yesterday.
03:43They just got physically handled yesterday.
03:45And some guys pay extra for that.
03:47All right, three straight weeks, runner's delight versus this Browns defense.
03:51What is going on with the Browns run defense?
03:54Well, you have a couple things.
03:55One is you have penetration without any type of like, you know,
03:59if you look at like Aide Huntington, getting up field without reading any blocks.
04:02So that's kind of the nature of this offense.
04:04So if you look at like the third down, third down and whatever it was, a long, long run,
04:09that was a trap.
04:10And many of their long plays, they were traps.
04:13And what that does, it allows you to come up field and the opposite guard come and kicks you out.
04:17So what they have to do is they have to make sure that they're playing their guy a little bit
04:22more
04:22than penetrating up field.
04:23They got to make sure they're starting to kind of play a little bit more old school.
04:26Now you won't get as much pressure, but you'll play the run a little bit better.
04:30And then secondly, you know, people have talked about the impact of Myles Garrett.
04:33Well, when you went into a game against Myles Garrett, he was the alpha.
04:36He was the guy every offensive coordinator had to block.
04:40Now that's Carson Swessinger.
04:41So when people say Carson Swessinger isn't playing, you know, at a high level,
04:45one is I think he's a little banged up.
04:47Two is he's the guy you have to block each week.
04:49So with Myles gone, you're saying, what guy can't we let beat us?
04:52And that's Carson Swessinger.
04:54So that's happening in the run game too.
04:55They're making sure they have a hat or two for him.
04:58And then thirdly, they got to not get moved.
05:01Once they start, you know, getting to the second half,
05:03they're getting those double teams and they're just getting vertically displaced.
05:07But when that happens, those guys in the second level got to tackle.
05:10So you have those four things that are happening.
05:12You're losing gap integrity.
05:13You're getting moved.
05:14You're not tackling well.
05:15And then that's why you get 100, you know,
05:17160 yards in the first half because of all four of those things.
05:20So it's not one thing.
05:21It's a combination of many things.
05:23What was more problematic for you?
05:24Was it the offense or was it the defense?
05:27Well, it was both sides, I would say, the interior, J.P., the lines.
05:33You're not creating any movement.
05:35And I would just say watch the game.
05:36When I watch the All-22, every single time the Steelers' offense or defensive line
05:42is winning the line of scrimmage and they're pushing the Browns back.
05:45You can't do much.
05:47You know, if you think about, like, the linebackers, Quincy Williams and Carson Swessinger,
05:51they have their defensive tackles in their lap trying to make tackles or redoubles
05:56and things like that.
05:56So, for me, it was just the physically getting handled inside,
06:01which is something they haven't done.
06:02And I don't think it's because they were playing soft or they talked or anything.
06:07I just think they got outplayed yesterday.
06:08And that happens to really good teams.
06:11And expectations are there.
06:12So that's kind of it, too.
06:13But that was my issue.
06:15They just got physically handled inside on both sides of the ball.
06:17All right, Coach, walk me through, because I think there's a chicken or egg thing here.
06:22Deshaun holding onto the ball too long and also dropping back way far along with the
06:27offensive line play.
06:29I know both are an issue, but which one are you more concerned with coming out of this game?
06:34Well, I'm going to say offensive line protection, but then because of what it leads to.
06:39And what it leads to is it leads to poor drops by Deshaun Watson.
06:43It does, and they're too deep.
06:44But when you're a quarterback, innately, you try to figure out ways to buy time.
06:50If you think about like last year with Shadori when he was in coming out of Colorado,
06:55he was a backtracker, right?
06:56So he was getting depth because he's trying to buy time.
07:00Same thing Watson is doing right now.
07:02He doesn't have a lot of time.
07:03So he's trying to get a little bit deeper in his drop, which is kind of screwing up for
07:07the offensive line because they think he's going to be at a particular spot.
07:11Browns might want to think about changing the launch point a little bit just to help
07:14those offensive linemen out a little bit.
07:16But a lot of those guys are getting beat.
07:18Fano had a tough time on the edge yesterday with Highsmith just kind of pushing that edge
07:22with great strength.
07:23So it's a combination of both.
07:25But the offensive line is leading to the bad habits of Watson right now.
07:30Now, Watson, again, has to do better at just making – he's got to assume the offensive
07:34line is going to do their job.
07:36Now, that's easy to say.
07:38We don't have grown 300-pound men trying to kill us like he does, and I understand that
07:43as a quarterback.
07:44But that's what's happening right now.
07:46The offensive line is not pass protecting very well, which is leading to bad habits by
07:51him.
07:51He's got to assume they're going to do a better job.
07:53They've got to – he's got to be in the right spot so they can trust him.
07:57So, really, they're both involved in it, but the physicality yesterday, both the run
08:01game and pass protection, were really poor by the offensive line.
08:04Coach, great stuff as always, buddy.
08:05We'll talk to you next week.
08:07I appreciate you guys, and we'll talk soon.
08:10And I'm sorry you're wrong.
08:11You're usually not wrong, but that one, you're wrong.
08:13Yeah, I think you didn't hit the dismount there on the personal flag there, but I won't
08:19find that.
08:20Well, you're wittier than I am, but it's okay.
08:23Not this time.
08:24Be good, buddy.
08:25Lance Rizlin there on the Wiseheart Right.
08:27We make it right.
08:28Call Kyle Wright Hotline.
