Transcript
00:00Okay, you just have to get into a...
00:03Let it all go. Let it all out.
00:05One, two, three, four.
00:08Check it, check it, check it, check it, check it, check it, check it, check it, check it, check it,
00:11check it.
00:11Check it, check it, check it, check it, check it, check it, check it.
00:14Wow! You sped it up, girl!
00:16Hey guys, it's Mi-Anne, and this is Beauty With Me.
00:19I don't even know how to begin.
00:21I'm just gonna say it.
00:22I'm shooting with Jackie Ina this week, and I am so beyond excited to meet her in person.
00:28Jackie's actually the winner of our Beauty Innovator of the Year Award, which is part
00:32of our Beauty Innovator Awards, a beauty award that Refinery29 puts out every single year.
00:37The Beauty Innovator of the Year Award is the highest honor that a person can get.
00:42Rihanna won last year, Jackie won this year.
00:45This year has been a landmark year in beauty with more and more brands coming out with
00:49inclusive shade ranges, and Jackie has been the gatekeeper for a lot of this.
00:54She has held brands accountable for their lack of inclusive shade ranges.
00:57She has worked with brands like Too Faced to help expand their foundation ranges, and
01:02she's done all of this while keeping a really relatable but strong message on her channel.
01:07I'm in New York right now, but I'm flying at the end of the week to LA to film with
01:10Jackie.
01:11She is actually going to pick my makeup and kind of create a look with me based off of
01:15the Refinery29 Beauty Innovator Award nominees and winners, and I will see you guys in LA.
01:21Bye!
01:22Hey guys!
01:23I am here in sunny, sunny LA, and I am here to film with Jackie.
01:29We are going to be shooting soon.
01:30I'm literally here for 24 hours, but it's going to be so worth it.
01:34Hi guys!
01:35I am here with Jackie Aina.
01:38She needs no introduction.
01:40As you guys know, Jackie is the recipient of our Beauty Innovator of the Year Award.
01:44Thank you!
01:45Because, wow.
01:46I mean, it was a unanimous vote.
01:48Aww, that's so sweet!
01:49You guys have showed me so much support for a very long time, so it really is an honor.
01:54Aww, well, I'm excited because inspired by your Instagram stories slash YouTube videos
02:00that you've done where you have your audience choose your makeup look, I thought it would
02:04be fun to use some of the Beauty Innovator Award nominees and winners and have you choose
02:09a look for me.
02:09Ha ha ha!
02:10Let's get started!
02:11I'm ready.
02:12Let's start with foundation!
02:14Okay!
02:15So, we got two options here.
02:16Let's roll up our sleeves, get our hands dirty.
02:17This is my favorite topic.
02:19We got NARS Natural Radiant, and then we have the Kosas Face Oil, which is like an indie
02:24product.
02:24It's like a face oil tint.
02:26Very different vibes here.
02:27Hmm.
02:28And I'm going to say go with NARS.
02:30Good choice.
02:31Just because NARS is the homie, you know?
02:33I hope this is still my shade.
02:34Oh.
02:36Sometimes the daylight will snitch on you.
02:39I kind of feel like I know what your vibe is, but I want you to tell me.
02:42Because you know I watch, she watches beauty with me all the time.
02:47Stuff.
02:48I do.
02:48Actually, Refinery29 is one of my favorite YouTube channels.
02:51I remember watching the one where you got, it was like a $2,000 facial, was it?
02:54And then you put the frozen ice cubes in your Bad and Bougie skincare routine!
02:58Because of that video.
03:01That was a really good idea.
03:02I mean, you've been on YouTube for 10 years.
03:0410 years, girl.
03:05YouTube then versus YouTube now is like completely different.
03:08You could not necessarily be like the most extroverted, the loudest, the most outgoing,
03:14but like still be moderately successful.
03:16Whereas now, YouTube is kind of, you know, trampled over people like me.
03:20I'm loud.
03:22Like I directly benefit from that.
03:24Don't be discouraged by that because I mean everything is going to look impossible when
03:27you have a goal.
03:28There's something for everyone.
03:30Like we don't have to wait for traditional media to set the trends anymore.
03:33It's so true.
03:33To tell us what's beautiful, what's acceptable, what's unacceptable.
03:36It's like we can create that standard now.
03:38So let's move on to concealer.
03:40We've got Urban Hale Niter and Laura Mercier Ultra Longwear.
03:44Oh, this is easy because I'm always going to be a full coverage girl.
03:47I'm going to go with Urban Decay because she's going to give us beats.
03:51She's going to give us, I stayed up till 6 AM, but you don't need to know.
03:54It's none of your business.
03:55You've gone on record saying before that like, you know, there was a period of time when you
03:58were on YouTube, but you didn't feel like you could talk about something like diversity,
04:02lack of foundation, shade ranges.
04:04I would be working with the brand and then they would be like, oh, don't say dark, say rich.
04:10And I'm just like, what?
04:11What is wrong with the word dark, you know?
04:13Then the response would be like, oh, well, we don't want to neglect our other followers.
04:18And I'd be like, but I'm black though.
04:21So what I really love about your foundation reviews is that you do speak so in depth about undertone
04:27because they get so overlooked.
04:28Yeah.
04:29They slap one orange.
04:30People don't really understand it.
04:31No, exactly.
04:32Especially for deep, dark skin.
04:33They give us one orange shade and then they're like, the shade is selling.
04:37And it's like, yeah, the shade selling because people are desperate.
04:39It's the only one.
04:40It's the only shade they have.
04:41And I guarantee you they're probably mixing it with everything in their bathroom cabinet
04:46just to make it work.
04:47I'm glad that we have way more options than we used to.
04:50It could be better.
04:51You really do hold brands accountable for the disparity there in shade ranges.
04:56And obviously this year was, you had a physical culmination, which was the Too Faced collection,
05:00Which was awesome.
05:01Which was amazing.
05:02You hold these brands accountable and you always do it, I think, in a kind way with humor.
05:07Have you had situations where, you know where I'm going with this.
05:11Have you had situations where brands, your followers, stuff like that kind of get angry with you because of that
05:19kind of tone you're taking?
05:23You know what?
05:26I feel like, look, I'm saying this because it is for the betterment of like, not just me, but people
05:32who look like me.
05:33When you come to my channel, like, did you learn something?
05:36Did you feel empowered?
05:38Did you feel recognized, appreciated?
05:42And if it comes at the expense of like, pissing off a couple people, I'm not worried about that.
05:48I'm so glad to say that most of the brands that I've worked with, and when I say most, I
05:51mean like 95% are super cooperative,
05:54like whatever Jackie wants.
05:56They're like, hey, you know, if you feel like that needs to be relayed, then we'll support you.
06:00Wait, first of all, I want to know what you just put on.
06:02Is it blush?
06:03Which one?
06:04Did you just put on blush?
06:06That's so pretty.
06:07And this is like a bronzer from this indie brand called Han.
06:11Oh, can I see that?
06:12Yeah.
06:13I like to see my face.
06:13It's like rice powder.
06:15Oh, wow!
06:15It's very interesting.
06:16A rice powder bronzer?
06:17I've never used a rice powder bronzer, but I love rice powder exfoliants.
06:22Everyone who's going to watch this video is going to comment on the hyaluronic acid, because that's all I talk
06:25about on Twitter.
06:26Hyaluronic acid and SPF, those are like my two favorite things.
06:28Your favorite thing?
06:29And kombucha.
06:30Oh, this is a-
06:31Barsali.
06:31This is an easy one.
06:32Giorgio Armani.
06:33This is an easy one.
06:33I'm obsessed with the Jelly Beam highlighters.
06:35I mean, I can't even really do much more than this.
06:39It's so gross.
06:40I love it though.
06:41It looks so slurpable.
06:42It's just straight up like-
06:44The fact that you're talking-
06:45I'm like really nervous that we're doing this right now.
06:49Girl, you're full on Barbara Walters mode, but also blending.
06:53Like, how?
06:54I think you can add more if you're comfortable with it.
06:56Let's do it.
06:57Beat face with me.
06:59Instead of beauty with me-
07:00Beat with me.
07:01Beat with me!
07:02Oh my god.
07:03Oh yeah, I like the fact that you put more on.
07:06Wait, can you give us a side shot so they can see this glow?
07:08It looks so good.
07:10I like it.
07:11Eye time.
07:12We got some options.
07:14Green face with me!
07:15We have-
07:16The Stila.
07:17Yes.
07:17Vivid and vibrant eyeshadow duos.
07:20We have the glitters.
07:21These are the lemon head glitters.
07:22And then we have the Marc Jacobs.
07:24There's other shades of the Stila too.
07:25Oh yes, let's see.
07:26We have all the shades.
07:27Something between these two.
07:29They're both jewel tones.
07:31Yeah.
07:32You know what?
07:32I like this one.
07:34Yeah?
07:34Let's do it.
07:35Okay, wait.
07:36If you're feeling spicy though, maybe you can add a little green like on the lower lash line.
07:40Yes, let's do it.
07:41We'll mix them.
07:42What would Jackie do?
07:43I would take the darker shade and blend that on my crease.
07:47It might be quite dark on you, so I would start super light.
07:50Super light.
07:50And blend your way up.
07:51That would be my crease.
07:53So.
07:53Cute so far.
07:54I like the color.
07:55Okay, what's next?
07:56Okay, so let's go with the glittery pink on the lid.
08:00Okay.
08:00Treat your finger situation?
08:02I love blending with my fingers.
08:04Whoa.
08:05That pigment though.
08:06Wow.
08:06They're really pigmented.
08:07New shades.
08:09Damn!
08:10Damn!
08:11Did y'all see this pigment though?
08:12Wow.
08:13That's really, really, really pigmented.
08:14That was like one swipe.
08:16Are there makeup techniques that you have learned in your 10 plus years of doing makeup
08:22that now looking back, you're like, why did I do that?
08:26There's a lot.
08:28First of all, I shaved off all my eyebrows when I was like 11.
08:33Probably not one of the smartest decisions I made.
08:35I think most of us have had an experience like that.
08:37Mm-mm.
08:38No, sis.
08:39Mm-mm.
08:40Not okay.
08:40She needed a lot of prayer back then.
08:43But who knows?
08:44Like 10, 15 years from now, we might be like, what were we thinking?
08:47I know!
08:48I may look at my face now like, girl, what were you thinking?
08:52Damn.
08:53Okay, what else should I do?
08:54Should I do more?
08:55Should I do less?
08:55Yes.
08:56We always go for a little bit more.
08:59We always do.
09:00Let's see a little pop of color along your bottom lash line.
09:03Are you comfortable with that?
09:04Let's do it.
09:05Which one?
09:05This one looks a little too frosty for the bottom.
09:08Yeah.
09:08I think we should go with this one.
09:09Let's do it.
09:10Jewel tone.
09:11It's very sexy.
09:13What is one product that Dennis always steals from you?
09:15Oh my God.
09:17Dennis, leave my masks the hell alone.
09:20Oh my God.
09:20He's always stealing my mask.
09:23He loves a good skincare moment.
09:25And girl, this color looks so good on you.
09:26I really like the combo.
09:27It's not too matchy-matchy because you know, some people feel like they have to match.
09:32They can get a little too monochrome.
09:32Yeah.
09:33They feel like they have to match exactly the color of their hair if they have like a fashion
09:36color.
09:37But this is really cute.
09:38Yeah.
09:39We're going to build it.
09:40We're going to build it.
09:41Build it up, honey.
09:42What's one thing that you wish people knew about creators that they don't know?
09:46Or a misconception?
09:47Oh, that were human.
09:49I would want someone to critique me the way that I critique brands.
09:52It's always done in a pretty professional and thoughtful way to where it's like, okay,
09:58I'm not trying to like rip this person to shreds or this brand, I should say.
10:03And I just a lot of times wish that that was reciprocated to me as a creator.
10:08But then again, even Jesus had haters.
10:09So, hey.
10:10We got some eyeliners.
10:11Do we have to use eyeliner?
10:12We don't have to use eyeliner.
10:13I don't want to use eyeliner.
10:14The eye is so pretty on its own.
10:15I just want to see the shadow eyeliner.
10:19It's the star of the look.
10:21You're canceled for today.
10:22But we are going to do mascara.
10:24Mascara.
10:25And I'm going to be biased.
10:26I'm going to pick my new recent favorite.
10:28Obsessed with Climax Mascara from NARS.
10:30It's so good.
10:31I feel like this is the one in be all mascara.
10:33Like you get volume.
10:34You get length.
10:35You get thickening.
10:36And there aren't a lot of mascaras that do all of that at once.
10:40This is me and you.
10:41Hey, okay.
10:42I'll just talk to you right here.
10:43You know when you get a brand new mascara and it's really okay.
10:46I know it's going to sound really inappropriate.
10:47You know it's like really wet.
10:49Yep.
10:49No pun.
10:50Climax.
10:51We're not going to go there.
10:52Alright guys.
10:52But I like the fact that this one is slightly not dry.
10:56You know how every mascara has to hit that peak after you use it?
10:58You have to like open it and you gotta like wait two weeks.
11:00You gotta use it for like a couple weeks and then it's like perfect.
11:03This mascara.
11:05It's already tiny.
11:05It's already at its climax.
11:07Like when you first start using it.
11:08That's what I love about it.
11:09I see what you did there.
11:09I think that's where they were going.
11:11It's at the climax.
11:11I have like no bottom eyelashes and that's the hardest thing.
11:14You like have like a hundred.
11:15I have like five.
11:16I will donate them to you.
11:17It's always better to have more hair than not enough hair.
11:21I'll tell that to my armpits cause I'm really hairy.
11:26Your eyes look so good.
11:29Okay.
11:29Only tip I would suggest is adding a little more blush.
11:32Okay.
11:33Let's do it.
11:33To kind of balance it out.
11:34Let's balance it out.
11:35Really.
11:36And the fact that it's like a peachy orange blush is going to coordinate with that crease color.
11:40I always try to match my blush color to what's in my crease.
11:44And then I always try to match my crease color to my blush to my lip.
11:48It does kind of bring everything together.
11:50It does.
11:51In a subliminal way almost.
11:52That's what I'm saying.
11:53Like you are matching.
11:54Exactly.
11:55Like something's going on here and I'm liking it.
11:57We kicked it up a notch.
11:58Kicked it up a notch.
11:59Shout out to Burt's Bees.
12:00That's cute.
12:01You highlighted pretty early in the face.
12:04At what face you usually highlight?
12:05That's like the second to last thing I do.
12:07So I'll do bronzer, blush, highlight, then I'll do my lip and then I'm done.
12:10That's funny because I always think about it like let's do the whole base.
12:13But now that I'm thinking about it, it actually makes sense because you're going to see it with the eyes
12:18on.
12:19So you know how much to apply.
12:20Exactly.
12:20We've got to do lip.
12:22Okay.
12:22We have got to do lip.
12:23We have.
12:24I already know the choice I made.
12:25I already know what you're going to pick.
12:27I'm obsessed with Mademoiselle.
12:29They're so good.
12:29Honestly, I feel like it's besides her complexion products, I feel like it's Fenty's Hero product.
12:35That's cute.
12:37I like it a lot.
12:38That is really cute.
12:39And they are really, really opaque.
12:40They are like these go on really nicely.
12:42Yes.
12:43And my lips are so dry right now.
12:46Who are you telling?
12:47My lips are always dry.
12:49We got some scenting spray.
12:50Yes.
12:51Can I do it?
12:51Can you mist me?
12:53First we're going to do.
12:54You have to do a couple practice sprays.
12:55Yeah.
12:55We don't ever want to just go straight in guys.
12:57That's when you're like ugh.
12:58And I might need a little.
12:59Yes.
13:00Touch up.
13:01Extra myself.
13:02This is the all-nighter.
13:03Cause we're trying to stay up all night, girl.
13:07It looks so good.
13:08I like it.
13:09I love it.
13:14Do you think there's a responsibility for creators, for influencers, people who have followings,
13:18to be pushing their industry forward?
13:21Yes.
13:22Yes.
13:22I mean, I believe to whom much is given, much is required.
13:26There's a reason why you have all of these eyes watching you.
13:31And it benefits not only you, but future generations to use it responsibly.
13:37Balance out the fact that you have all of these opportunities and money and people following you.
13:42At least balance it out and maybe bring someone up with you.
13:45Or give back to your community.
13:47I usually vibe more and connect more with people of influence that it's not just about, like, building themselves up.
13:54It's about what are they doing for other people.
13:56Like, I love seeing that.
13:57Congratulations again.
13:58And thank you so much.
13:59You were the best.
14:01I'm glad you had fun.
14:02I love it.
14:03Bye, guys.
14:04Everyone go check Jackie out.
14:07Y'all probably all subscribe to her anyway, but go say congratulations to her on her channel.
14:13We welcome you.
14:14Come on over.
14:15I don't bite.
14:16Well, maybe sometimes.
14:17If you mean to me.
14:18Yeah.
14:19Be careful.
