When it comes to lining your eyes, you probably don't need us to tell you the basics. But there is one part, at least for us, we never can seem to master quite like we want to: lining our inner rims. Effectively coating your waterline can be a tricky and sometimes painful experience, but it's an absolute necessity if you really want to nail that super-sultry eye look.

00:00Oh, we're getting sexual. None of this all-American girl BS.
00:10So, whenever I try to get that really strong, sexy, like, inner eyeliner look,
00:16I just look crazy when I do it, like a BDI little rat. I swear. No, I really look nuts.
00:22What I would love to do is show you a really easy way to get that black inside the eye,
00:26give you that bold look that you love in young Hollywood,
00:29but make it very easy by pairing it with mined metals for a modern smokey look.
00:34Awesome. Let's do it.
00:36The easiest way to start is with your black pencil liner.
00:40You always want to layer your color. If I was to put shadow down first on the lid
00:45and then go over it with black, I'd never get that true depth of color.
00:49And I'm lining right on that water line from left to right.
00:54I'm then going to line also on the top water line.
00:58I'm going to take a matte taupe shadow.
01:00And the reason I'm starting with taupe is that's going to give you a guideline for your line,
01:05but also going to give you soft depth and dimension,
01:07and take away that hardness that you really don't love.
01:11So, I'm using a liner brush, and I'm bringing this taupe shadow right along the lash line at the top.
01:17So, I'm just taking the same taupe shadow, and I'm lining right along the bottom lash line.
01:24We don't need that line to be perfect. We want it to be a little smoky and a little sexy.
01:29Now, when we go back in with our black pencil, we've got a guide,
01:32but we also have something that won't give us that stark black hard line that you don't love.
01:39So, taupe is our friend with the smoky eye, especially because we don't want that black to look hard.
01:45We just want it to have great presence. So, I'm going back in with my taupe,
01:48and this time I'm using a soft dome brush, and I'm going to bring that right into the crease,
01:55back and forth like a windshield wiper.
01:57I love Mind Metallics for you. They're great this season,
02:00and they're going to make that bold black look really beautiful.
02:04So, what I'm doing here is using a black that has a bit of texture to it,
02:07and I'm lining right over my pencil, and now we're going in with a soft gold shimmer shadow.
02:14Wherever I put my brush down is my strongest deposit of color,
02:17so I'm starting right in the center of the lid.
02:20I'm using a really soft brush so my color doesn't look hard,
02:25and I'm sculpting out the eye from crease to lash.
02:29Next, mascara. I'm applying my mascara with a fan brush so that I can get right to the root.
02:35And then we're going back in with our gold right under the eye, and finishing with a bit of black,
02:42a little bit of cleanup with our foundation brush.
02:46Alright, I mean, give it a try.
02:48I'm going to make you do it.
02:49Okay. You do it in such a smooth line, I'm like, uh.
02:54I'm sure it's also much more difficult when someone scary looking is staring over your shoulder.
02:59No, I like it. You're a nice teacher.
03:02Alright, this is it. Did I do it?
03:05Looks fantastic.
03:06Thank you so much, James. I really love it.
03:08I feel very fierce, so keep watching on Refinery29.
03:13We'll see you next time.
