00:00Is that Rivalry Week Wednesday, Central Eastern, Fort Field?
00:04Good morning, 97.1. It's a victory Monday.
00:08Rivalry Week. You heard the deep voice guy there.
00:11And I know it's Central and Eastern.
00:13Yeah, Wednesday, Fort Field.
00:16Are we going to have to separate you guys?
00:17I'll be there. You going to be there?
00:20No, I wasn't planning.
00:21Oh, it just means more in Ypsilanti.
00:24Yes, it does. Well, it's short of trip, I guess.
00:27Can I give you an impression real quick and tell me who I am?
00:30Yeah.
00:32Oh! Tom Brady did that at least 19,000 times yesterday.
00:36He's still a fan watching the game.
00:39It drives me nuts, dude. It drives me nuts.
00:41And I do like the emotion that you hear from some commentators.
00:46Certainly, I think Burkhart and Brady, Brady's actually gotten better.
00:50Yeah.
00:51It was kind of weird when he first started because,
00:54remember his big thing was like,
00:56I'm going to transform the way games are called.
01:00Yeah, he signed the contract that took a whole year
01:03before he actually called a game.
01:05Yeah, and then he's becoming a little bit more personable, I think.
01:09The one thing that even I still enjoy,
01:12even though, John, we played the game for 10 years,
01:14is getting different point of views.
01:16Tom Brady talking about some coverages
01:18and what the quarterback should be thinking.
01:20There's still some things that even I learned from watching it.
01:22I don't think you have to nerd out too much
01:24because the average football fan is,
01:26you know, you can't be like,
01:27hey, it's cover three, you know, middle dog crop.
01:30You know what I mean?
01:30Like, people aren't going to understand terms like that.
01:32But I think he's done a better job of just explaining
01:37why plays work, why plays don't work.
01:39And that's like, even me as a fan watching is,
01:42I still enjoy that.
01:43Oh, I do too.
01:43I could do without some of the screaming.
01:47Yeah.
01:47At one point, I went back and re-watched it again last night.
01:50And at one point, it was four straight plays
01:53where Burkhardt's calling the play.
01:54And it's just, oh!
01:56I'm just like, come on.
01:57Then you need to listen to...
01:59I can offset that a little bit.
02:02As you were listening to the Michigan broadcast,
02:03you could probably hear me go, oh, no.
02:07Groan.
02:09Jeez.
02:10Oh, boy.
02:11Yeah, we've all been there.
02:12And even doing the game for five years,
02:14you know, with the Lions,
02:15it's like there was times where I had to turn my mic off.
02:17Oh, yeah.
02:18Just like, oh, I don't want to be that guy.
02:21Radio's obviously different.
02:22But, man, yeah, I don't really know how to feel this morning.
02:27I mean, obviously happy with the win,
02:28but it feels like until you get some sort of update on Jack Campbell,
02:35that's just kind of a dark cloud.
02:38What should be, you know, a celebratory morning,
02:41and it still should be, don't get me wrong,
02:43but this is, you know, potential real-life stuff
02:45that we're watching.
02:46And, man, just praying for him and, you know,
02:49kind of reminded me, we don't know yet with Jack,
02:51but even when Hutchinson had that injury against Dad,
02:56that should have been the day that, man,
02:57we're killing the Cowboys.
02:59Oh, yeah, it's Jerry's birthday.
03:01You know, hooking ladders to our tackles.
03:03Like, we're just having fun.
03:05And then something like that happens.
03:07It's just like you can't.
03:08It takes the air out of the sails.
03:10Yeah, you can't.
03:10Like, it just puts a dark cloud over it a little bit.
03:12So, praying for Jack, his family.
03:16I know Dan Campbell, I think,
03:17usually talks at some point in the afternoon.
03:20So, by that point, you know,
03:22hopefully he'll have an update,
03:24and hopefully it's an encouraging one
03:26because that was scary.
03:28I asked John if he had ever experienced
03:30anything like that with a teammate.
03:31Have you?
03:32Yes.
03:33Yeah.
03:34And Jermichael Finley,
03:36who was a great tight end for us in Green Bay,
03:40pretty similar situation where, you know,
03:43he catches a pass over the middle of the field,
03:44takes a shot.
03:45You know, as an offensive lineman,
03:47you're running down to trying to help guys up,
03:49and when you look down, it's just like,
03:51whoa, like, we got to,
03:52you got to wave the trainers and the doctors over.
03:55Something's wrong here.
03:56And it's horrible, man.
03:58Like, it's because you're just so in tune
04:02with the game, the game, the game, the game,
04:04the game, and then you see,
04:05especially a guy like, you know,
04:07like, Jermichael Finley was, like,
04:08kind of one of our leaders, too,
04:09like Jack Campbell is,
04:10and good teammate, good guy, right?
04:13Captain on the team.
04:15It brings you back to real world real fast,
04:17and you could see it even yesterday
04:19with the emotions and Hutchinson.
04:22I mean, man, yeah, tearing up.
04:25Like, that's your brother, dude.
04:26And you know injuries are going to happen.
04:30Those are the ones that you hope
04:31you never have to go through
04:32or you ever have to see, right?
04:34We know guys are going to,
04:35you're going to have a knee injury at some point.
04:37You're going to have high ankle sprain, right?
04:39Like, you're going to have some of those injuries.
04:41What happened to Hutchinson, right?
04:43Like, those happen,
04:45and you can kind of galvanize around a team.
04:46Okay, we know we're going to be missing him.
04:48It's the injuries like this
04:49where you talk about potential neck,
04:52you know, back
04:53that you just don't know
04:55that are just frightening, man,
04:57because that's not just,
04:59hey, is Jack going to be okay to play next week?
05:01Is he going to come back in a couple weeks, right?
05:05It's, is Jack going to be okay as a person?
05:08Right, yeah.
05:08One of the alerts,
05:09and this wasn't from the Lions,
05:11but it was people that were around,
05:12you know, trying to give an update
05:14of what they were watching
05:15as he was going up the tunnel.
05:17One of them said,
05:18yeah, well, he was,
05:19eyes were open,
05:20and he was breathing.
05:22And you're like,
05:23this is what we're focusing on?
05:25And, and again, it's like,
05:27it's, it's just OMG.
05:28Yeah, yeah.
05:29And it's just,
05:30those are just, man,
05:31those are the ultimate scary ones.
05:33And when you go,
05:34it's so hard.
05:35And, and I commend,
05:36you know,
05:36the, the, the Lions
05:37and the defense
05:38and, you know,
05:39Shepard and Hutchinson,
05:41you could see
05:42galvanizing that group,
05:44you know,
05:44to do it for Jack.
05:45And, you know,
05:46it was,
05:48man, it's just so hard.
05:50Those are just the injuries that
05:52if John goes down my right tackle
05:54and it's like,
05:54okay, I'm going to be without John
05:55for four to six weeks,
05:56let him get healthy.
05:57That's fine.
05:58I feel, you know,
05:58I feel bad for you,
05:59but you do your thing, buddy.
06:00It's just these ones
06:00that you just don't know.
06:01And that's why all we can do
06:03is, you know,
06:03hope and pray
06:04that there's some sort of,
06:06you know,
06:07an encouraging update today.
06:08Yeah.
06:09And the same thing happened
06:10even last year.
06:11We were doing a preseason game
06:13in Atlanta
06:13and I can't remember
06:14the kid's name.
06:15I apologize.
06:16But, you know,
06:17he went down
06:18with a scary look.
06:18It really scary injury
06:19was down
06:20and they ended up
06:21just canceling
06:21the rest of the game.
06:22But you could see like
06:24that's your brother out there,
06:25right?
06:25Like you're not worried
06:26about Jack Campbell,
06:28the football player
06:29and helping us get back.
06:30You're worried about
06:32I just want an update.
06:33I just want an update
06:34to know that his health
06:35as a person
06:36is somewhat encouraging.
06:38So you're not a football
06:39player in that moment.
06:40You're a person.
06:41You're a husband.
06:42You're a father.
06:43He's got a young kid.
06:44You know,
06:44you're a friend
06:45to a lot of these guys
06:45in the locker room
06:46more than you are
06:47even a teammate.
06:50We want to hear
06:50that there's some movement.
06:51Right.
06:52You know,
06:52I think that's the update
06:53we're all hoping to hear.
06:54Yeah.
06:55And his teammates
06:56more than anybody,
06:57right?
06:57His teammates
06:57more than anybody
06:58and I'm sure that,
06:59you know,
06:59there's probably some guys
07:00that probably went
07:01to the hospital last night.
07:02I mean,
07:02that's not uncommon.
07:04And we haven't heard
07:05those stories yet,
07:05but I'm sure that happens
07:07because that's,
07:07but that's the tough part
07:09in the football game
07:11where you're just
07:13ultimate adrenaline,
07:14you know,
07:15testosterone driven.
07:16And then all of a sudden
07:17it goes to real life
07:19like that.
07:20And it's like,
07:21how do we get ourselves
07:22back into that mode?
07:23That's the biggest challenge.
07:25And it's challenging
07:26for both teams.
07:27I think even,
07:27you know,
07:28even Minnesota players,
07:29like you saw them,
07:30you know,
07:31all kind of praying
07:31on the sideline
07:32for Jack too.
07:33So man,
07:34it's just unfortunate
07:34part of the business
07:35that these,
07:36these type of things happen,
07:37but man,
07:38it's just really hope.
07:40Hopefully this afternoon,
07:41you know,
07:42we can get a positive update
07:43on Jack because he's just,
07:46we all know what type
07:47of player he is,
07:47but he's also a tremendous
07:49young man too,
07:50man.
07:51He's just an awesome kid.
07:52So praying for the best
07:53for Jack.
07:53So no easy transition,
07:55but we do want to talk
07:56about the game.
07:56And the one that I want
07:57to talk to you about with
07:58is Cade Mays goes down,
08:01Juice Scruggs comes in
08:04and there were some
08:06adjustments that Drew
08:06Petsig made,
08:07but it felt like they
08:08were more of a unit.
08:10They were more in tuned
08:11with each other
08:12when Juice was in there.
08:13Did you feel or see
08:14the same thing?
08:16I don't think,
08:17well,
08:17I don't want to put
08:18any of the blame
08:18on Cade Mays
08:19for the first half,
08:20right?
08:20Like,
08:21let me just say that quick
08:22because some of the
08:23protection errors
08:24and the,
08:25what was it?
08:25Four sacks were,
08:26yeah,
08:27some of it was just
08:27a lot of one-on-one
08:28matchup.
08:28Tight ends getting beat
08:29late into plays.
08:32I didn't think it was
08:33like a total lapse
08:34of communication
08:35and guys are just
08:36running free
08:36and man,
08:37what are we doing?
08:37And then Scruggs
08:38gets in there
08:38and it's like,
08:39oh wow,
08:39we're blocking
08:40everybody up.
08:40That wasn't the case,
08:41but Dan Campbell
08:43kind of hinted at it
08:44when he talked about
08:45Cade Mays coming back.
08:46They feel like they
08:47have two starting centers,
08:48capable starting centers
08:49in this league.
08:49And let's be honest,
08:51you paid Cade Mays,
08:52Cade Mays is making
08:53a whole lot more money
08:53than Juice Scruggs is,
08:54right?
08:55And that's just
08:55the pecking order,
08:57how it works
08:58in the NFL.
08:59You're getting paid
09:00high money,
09:01you're going to be
09:01the starter.
09:02Juice Scruggs
09:04has proven though
09:05that that was his
09:08fifth game?
09:09Yeah.
09:10Started four,
09:11Cade came back
09:11last week,
09:12right?
09:13Cade goes out.
09:13Okay,
09:14so that was his
09:14fourth and four
09:15and a half games.
09:16He's proven that
09:16he can be a reliable guy
09:18and that's what you want
09:20on the depth
09:21of your offensive line.
09:22You want guys
09:22that can come in,
09:23we don't have to change
09:24the entire game plan,
09:25we don't have to start
09:26double teaming this guy
09:27because we're a little
09:28bit weaker here
09:29and now it's just
09:30throwing off the chemistry
09:31across not only
09:33the offensive line
09:33but the entire offense.
09:34No,
09:35I thought Juice Scruggs
09:35looked awesome
09:36and I think that
09:37I got to give credit
09:38to Hank Fraley
09:39and Drew Petsing,
09:42Dan Skipper
09:43who's been in that
09:43offensive line room
09:44this year
09:45helping as an assistant
09:46changing some things
09:47in the game,
09:48in the run game.
09:49it drove me nuts
09:50last week
09:51watching the run game
09:52and how slow developing
09:53some of these plays were
09:55and it's just
09:55Jameer Gibbs
09:5610 yards deep
09:57and dance in the backfield
09:59and kind of wait.
10:00Yesterday,
10:00everything was downhill.
10:02Everything was downhill fast.
10:03It didn't matter
10:04if you were bringing pressure
10:05off the backside.
10:05It didn't matter
10:06if the defensive line
10:07was slanting.
10:08We're going to be
10:09through line of scrimmage
10:10before you have a chance
10:11to make that second reaction
10:13and make some plays
10:14and I can't say enough
10:17about how much
10:17I love the adjustments
10:18they made in the run game
10:19where it came to
10:20just attacking the line
10:22of scrimmage
10:22and not dancing around
10:23and waiting to see
10:24what the defense
10:25was going to do.
10:26And Gibbs hits it
10:27so quickly.
10:28And even...
10:30That's when he's at his best.
10:31Right.
10:31And Vocky didn't hit...
10:33doesn't do anything
10:34like Gibbs does.
10:35But having those quick hitters
10:37has helped him as well.
10:39Sure.
10:39Yeah.
10:39And getting through
10:40just that first line
10:41of defense.
10:42Right.
10:42And even there was
10:43a couple plays with Vocky
10:45where it's like,
10:46oh, one yard gain.
10:47And then all of a sudden
10:47he's straight for like
10:48seven yards.
10:49And it's like,
10:49oh, wow, okay.
10:51That was cool.
10:52Good job.
10:53And Vocky,
10:55that was...
10:56I think we talked about it
10:56last Monday too
10:57is do they have to start
10:58looking for a number two guy
11:00to start taking
11:00some of this workload
11:01off Gibbs
11:02because through the
11:02first five games
11:03it was probably going
11:05to be unsustainable
11:06when you get to
11:07November and December
11:08football asking
11:09your running back
11:10to carry the ball
11:1135 times
11:12or 35 touches,
11:13whatever it was
11:13he was averaging.
11:15Vocky,
11:15he showed up,
11:16man.
11:16He took care of the football
11:17and there was even
11:18a couple pass protections
11:20in there.
11:20He's getting his nose
11:21in there.
11:22And that's how you
11:22earn yourself more
11:23playing time
11:23as a running back.
11:24If you can be
11:25a third down guy
11:26not only catching the ball,
11:28team like Minnesota,
11:29can you pick up
11:29a middle linebacker
11:30that's just screaming
11:31through the A-gap
11:32unblocked?
11:32And he,
11:33I think he earned
11:35a lot of trust
11:36yesterday
11:37for this offense,
11:38for the coaching staff
11:39and from his teammates
11:40to say,
11:40okay,
11:41we don't have to
11:41put it all on
11:43Jameer.
11:43When Jameer's out
11:44of the game,
11:44we don't have to
11:45panic or do
11:45anything extra.
11:47Vocky showed
11:48yesterday,
11:48now he's got to
11:49prove he can be
11:49consistent with it,
11:50but he showed
11:51that he can be
11:51a reliable guy
11:52to come in
11:53and take some
11:53of that wear
11:54and tear
11:54off of Jameer.
11:55Jameer was
11:56unbelievable
11:56yesterday too.
11:57Again,
11:58man,
11:58he's so special.
11:59Vocky heard TJ
12:00on the show
12:01last week
12:01and said,
12:01oh,
12:01you need a
12:02number two
12:02running back.
12:03Yeah.
12:03I'll show you.
12:05Let me step up.
12:06I think he had
12:06one carry
12:1065 yards
12:11and you're right,
12:12running through
12:12some tough contact.
12:13That's big.
12:13If he could be
12:14consistent with it,
12:15that's the challenge
12:15now.
12:16Got some text
12:17to get to,
12:17some phone calls
12:18as well,
12:18248-539-9797.
12:20Phone calls
