Barbell shoulder shrugs are a simple but effective exercise for developing the upper traps, improving upper-back strength, and building a thicker appearance through the neck and shoulder area.
π Set your posture first.
Stand tall with your feet about hip- to shoulder-width apart, chest up, ribs controlled, and core lightly braced. Hold the bar just outside your thighs.
π Shrug upward, not backward.
Think about lifting your shoulders straight toward your ears. Avoid rolling your shoulders in circles, it adds little benefit and can make the movement less controlled.
π Let the traps do the work.
Keep your elbows mostly straight and avoid turning the movement into an upright row by bending your arms excessively.
