We're all die-hard fashion fiends here at Refinery29, but even we sometimes can't keep up with the latest and greatest that walk down the runway — or the grocery aisle. While the trends of our times are fast and furious, there are some age-old mainstays that never go out of, well, style. Think: the floral prints of the '70s or scarf tricks of the '60s that Joan Harris would eye. And, who better to consult than 83-year-old Joyce Carpati, one of our Advanced Style muses, who still has her favorite blouse from the Nixon era?

00:00People think style dies with age, that fashion is intertwined with youth.
00:06Let me tell you, darling, style has always been the best reflection of who you are.
00:12Except in the 80s.
00:15I truly admire how bold young people are today.
00:20Be daring. Even if it doesn't work perfectly, you'll look back and laugh.
00:25Or at least your friends will.
00:30A baseball hat as a statement piece?
00:34Last I heard, those were reserved for the boys and the ball games.
00:42If leaving it to the imagination isn't your style,
00:46at least make sure you don't pay full price for half a shirt.
00:50You don't have to be 83 to know that's just math.
00:57I do have to hand it to the girls.
01:00The only vegetables I used to get at their age were from the olives in my dirty martini.
01:08Go ahead. Spend $200 on those jeans with holes pre-cut in them.
01:14I prefer to have my clothes reflect my flawless personality.
01:22So I just got this 90s vintage t-shirt.
01:2590s? Vintage? Please!
01:28Try a blouse that's lasted me from the Nixon White House, then we can talk vintage.
01:36Over-sharing is not my idea of playing it coy.
01:44Have mystery and you will always be unforgettable.
01:54Style gives you a voice. Have something to say.
