00:00It's now 22 straight losses in Pittsburgh.
00:03Browns in the regular season.
00:05Haven't won a game there since 2003.
00:092003.
00:11I ask this, and I think it's okay.
00:15Is anybody surprised what happened yesterday?
00:18And I think it tells us a lot of things about where this team is right now.
00:23And they aren't bad things.
00:25Welcome to Baskin and Phelps, everybody.
00:27I'm Jeff Phelps.
00:28My partner over here, Mr. Andy Baskin.
00:31Oh, I hate to bum you out.
00:33I think it's 23, Jeff.
00:35Did I say 23?
00:37No, 22 is what it was going into yesterday.
00:39Did I say 22?
00:40Yeah.
00:40Yeah, I'm sorry.
00:41It's 23.
00:42I didn't want to add to our misery.
00:43No, I've got it written down right there.
00:45L22, but that was before the game.
00:46Yeah, we just didn't advance it.
00:48No, that's okay.
00:49It's all right.
00:50You know what?
00:5023 since 2003.
00:52If that would have been the only mistake yesterday,
00:54they may have looked a little bit better.
00:55It was a miserable weekend for football.
00:58Can I just – I'd much rather sit here and listen to Dan talk about how
01:03everyone got drunk in Milwaukee for the parade than have to relive
01:07yesterday's game and to relive Saturday's Buckeye game.
01:11It was about as bad as it gets.
01:13Dan's not going to talk about that because we're going to talk a lot about
01:15the Browns and the Steelers.
01:16Oh, Dan, I'm sorry.
01:17And the Browns.
01:18You okay?
01:19I just want to make sure you're all right.
01:20Oh, I'm – kidding me.
01:22I'm doing real well.
01:23Okay.
01:24I still can't believe it happened.
01:26Congratulations.
01:27That's about the only happy thing I have going on right now.
01:29I had nothing to do with it.
01:30Just sat there sweating.
01:31Because there wasn't a whole lot of happiness yesterday, Jeff,
01:33I'm going to be honest.
01:34Well, no, but here's the thing, Andy.
01:37I would have loved for the Browns to have gone to Pittsburgh and won a football game.
01:42So would you.
01:44The Browns did a really nice job winning five of their first seven games.
01:49Your defense looked pretty good in those five wins.
01:52Your offense looked good enough to win coming back in the fourth quarter.
01:57And you won those games by four points in one game and four of the wins by three points.
02:05And I – if you thought that that meant the team had arrived and was a big-time power,
02:11even though it was sitting third in the playoff standings and it moved up in everybody's power rankings and all
02:15that,
02:16I think you were leading with your heart there and not your head.
02:20And that's – honestly, that's all okay, I think.
02:25Did they play well yesterday?
02:26No, of course not.
02:27They did not play well.
02:29And there was one thing that went well on offense, and that was it.
02:32Harold Fannin.
02:34Other than that, there was nothing that worked on the offense.
02:38Deshaun to Harold worked yesterday.
02:40That was it.
02:42Defensively, what worked?
02:43Well, not stopping the run.
02:45I would say your pass defense was okay, except you can't say that because the Steelers really didn't need it.
02:54So it was just kind of like if you order a steak in a restaurant and they put an onion
03:00ring on top of it,
03:03like they used to way back in the day.
03:05I just went to a place that did that last week.
03:07I went to a place that did that on Saturday.
03:09Really?
03:10Yeah.
03:10Congratulations.
03:11Yeah.
03:13And that's what the passing game was for the Steelers yesterday.
03:16It was the onion ring?
03:17It was the onion ring.
03:18That made the steak so much better?
03:20No, it didn't make it better.
03:21The steak was the steak.
03:22Yeah, but the onion ring, man, that's like – I'm not a big onion fan either, but I like onion
03:26rings.
03:27Well, of course you do.
03:28It's a fried food.
03:29Yeah.
03:30I'm the same way.
03:31Okay, I respect that.
03:32But that's what the passing game was for Pittsburgh.
03:34The meat was the running game.
03:36Yeah.
03:36That's all you really needed.
03:38Oh, I see what you're saying.
03:39Because you got the onion ring, it was like, well, okay, that's nice too.
03:44That's what –
03:45So you're saying we got onion ringed.
03:47Well, yeah.
03:49It just – but it's not – I don't think anybody should be stunned.
03:56And I don't think anybody should be –
03:57I actually am not stunned.
03:58I agree with you.
03:58I don't think anybody should be overly disappointed.
04:00Now, there are aspects of this that we're going to get into that just weren't good.
04:04You know, bring up every question you want about your quarterback hanging on to the football too long.
04:10Bring up any question you want about –
04:12Both.
04:13The off –
04:13The off –
04:13Oh, you're hanging on too long.
04:15Both.
04:16Shadour was hanging on too long too.
04:18Well, he wasn't.
04:18There's just no way you get those down the field penalties without hanging on to the ball too long.
04:22All right, he wasn't out there long enough for me to make a huge judgment on it.
04:26It's like, okay, you haven't played in a while and blah, blah, blah, blah.
04:29It's got to be ready.
04:29You're always one play away.
04:31Okay.
04:32I'm not even worried about him.
04:34Deshaun held onto the ball too long.
04:36He did a great job avoiding the rush a couple of times and then stepped up.
04:40And instead of like, okay, I avoided the rush.
04:43I've stepped up.
04:44Let me get rid of it.
04:44It's like, oh, let me look around the field.
04:46Oh, that's how you're going to get sacked eight times.
04:49And that happened a lot.
04:50The running game was non-existent.
04:52The offensive line wasn't good.
04:54Again, Harold Fannin, that was your offense.
04:58But again, I think that's, it's not okay.
05:02You want to be better than that?
05:05But where did you think this team was?
05:08I thought they were somewhere a little better than what we saw yesterday.
05:12I didn't think they were that much farther ahead.
05:14Wishful thinking on your part, and I was with you.
05:16Yeah, I still think they're better than what we saw yesterday.
05:19I mean, I, I do, too.
05:22I'm a little worried about Denzel Ward's hand that we really didn't touch on last week.
05:27That even the fact that he played in that game against Tennessee with five stitches in his hand and really
05:32messed things up.
05:33I like, you saw the Olay tackle he had on the first touchdown.
05:36I was like, what's he doing, man?
05:38That doesn't look like him.
05:40Something's got to be wrong there.
05:41Something had to be wrong there.
05:42The offensive line, like, what was that?
05:47What was that?
05:48Spencer Fano had a, had a tough day.
05:52But he wasn't alone.
05:53The offensive line just had a really rough day.
05:55I, I, I attack it as a group.
05:57I'm not going to sit here and, yeah, you can sit here and pick out individuals and how they played
06:01yesterday.
06:01But they're a group.
06:02They, the O-line's got to live and die together.
06:04And they died yesterday.
06:06The offensive line, the rebuilding of the offensive line is a work in progress.
06:13You have two cornerstones, Fano and Barber, and then you have three guys who are filling the holes right now.
06:21Could Zion Johnson be one?
06:22Yeah, he might be one.
06:23Might be one moving forward.
06:25Will Elton Jenkins be one?
06:27Probably not.
06:28Older player.
06:29Titus Howard?
06:30Probably not.
06:30But they're doing the job now.
06:32And yesterday just didn't, didn't go real well.
06:36But I, I honestly, Andy, nobody I don't think here expected them to, you know, finish 10 and 7 this
06:44year.
06:44That's still a very real possibility.
06:46Sure.
06:47You know, as we said, after the first seven games, if you, if you go 500 the rest of the
06:52way, you get 10 wins and you make the playoffs.
06:54I think they still have a chance to do that.
06:56Sure, I do too.
06:57But yesterday.
06:57At least one game in the NFL.
06:58It happens all the time.
06:59Exactly.
07:00Yeah.
07:00But it was one that I think we just thought, if you can win this game, hmm, maybe there's something
07:08more here than what we even think there might be.
07:10I agree.
07:11I think it was a lot of wishful thinking by a lot of us.
07:13And they still have time to, to change our mind.
07:16Again, it's, it's one week in the NFL.
07:18Yeah.
07:18And we all know how up and down.
07:20I do think it's interesting.
07:21You got the trade deadline coming up next week.
07:23If they try to make some moves, this isn't baseball.
07:25I have to tell myself that every day that they can't, you know, bring in four new guys and then
07:30all of a sudden make the playoffs.
07:32Yeah.
07:32That doesn't work that way in the NFL.
07:35I'm still wondering what they're going to do with the quarterback situation by next week.
07:39I, the offense, I just don't think they're as bad as they played yesterday.
07:43I think they're better than that.
07:44I just, I just don't get just abysmal.
07:46I don't get all the bat, uh, the battered passes yesterday.
07:51Like I, what was Deshaun doing?
07:54What happened?
07:55What was going on on the offensive line?
07:58Well, I, I just don't remember a game with that many block passes for a guy that tall.
08:02That just doesn't happen.
08:04Weird.
08:05There was just some weird stuff in that game.
08:08Pittsburgh.
08:09Maybe that's just it.
08:11Well, 2003.
08:15Correct.
08:16Yeah.
08:162003, 2003 and 88 for a sweep.
08:19And I just, I, the smack talk was ridiculous.
08:22I actually think that everything that they said going into the game by both teams made
08:27the referees super on edge to let you know, they were in charge in the beginning of the
08:31game.
08:32And that's how you end up with what?
08:3485 yards and penalties.
08:36Nine for 85.
08:38What happens when you're talking during the week, everybody sees it.
08:42Now, you know, you've got a hostile, you've got a little bit of hostility.
08:46Then you take some of that hostility out on the field and the referees are going to let
08:51you know early on as they rightfully should to let you know that they're in charge and
08:56you're not.
08:56And they're going to throw flags.
08:58If you're going to get a taunting call, come on, man.
09:04Discipline.
09:05That's discipline.
09:08It's a lot of the stuff we heard last year and the last couple of years when they were
09:12three wins, five wins and hearing that, okay, Kevin Stefanski is not controlling his team.
09:17Yeah.
09:18And blah, blah, blah.
09:19And we've, this is, this is okay as well.
09:24I think we've, we've heard so much of the same stuff from Todd Munkin that we heard from
09:28Kevin Stefanski and Todd puts, puts it in a different way, but the, we got to be better.
09:36We have to coach better, blah, blah.
09:38What's a coach supposed to say?
09:39There's nothing.
09:40Right.
09:41And Kevin caught grief for it because Todd's in a honeymoon period and they won five of their
09:45first seven games.
09:46Nobody's saying anything about it.
09:48No, they shouldn't have said anything about it.
09:50When Kevin was saying it, you shouldn't say anything about it.
09:52When Todd saying it, what are they supposed to say?
09:54What are they supposed to do?
09:56Hey, we got our, you know, what's kick.
09:57We got to be better.
09:58Simple to me.
09:59I think two one six four seven four zero zero nine two is the number to join us.
10:05We're going to talk to Scott Petrack from the Chronicle telegram at 11.
10:08Tyvis Powell, Browns radio network coming up at one o'clock.
10:12It's a therapy Monday.
10:13Oh yes, it is.
10:14With the fan powered by vans, auto service, and tire pros.
10:18Finally, an auto shop that listens, explains, and makes it easy.
10:23Browns go to Pittsburgh did not look good, folks.
10:26Where's your head on this team?
10:28If you liked them before and thought it was going well, shouldn't you kind of still be
10:35feeling the same way today?
10:37I kind of think we should.
10:39It's Baskin and Phelps here on the fan.
