00:03with our next guest he joins us every single tuesday at 320 on the wiseheart right we make
00:08it right call kyle wright hotline to talk ohio state's whoopsie the second of the season talk
00:15luke fahey's full game debut not great bob from a to z sports the rufino and joe show joe de
00:23leon
00:23joining us right now joe welcome to the show how you guys doing doing all right here uh it was
00:28kind
00:28of a whole slaughter of a weekend from the cleveland sports side of things between the browns game and
00:35the ohio state game we'll start with the ohio state game because i i just i guess we can start
00:40with luke fahey and and how you felt he played in his first start as buckeyes quarterback as a true
00:45freshman i think that there's been a very weird evaluation of talking about him because i think
00:51that naturally it's either a young player like that any any quarterback it's always they're good or
00:56they're they're terrible you know there's there's never anything in between and i think that the
01:01nuance that needs to be added to the conversation is that he's a true freshman he did the most that
01:06he could possibly do and it felt as though that the limitations of having a true freshman not having
01:12the composure needed to finish in the red zone and to avoid silly penalties procedural stuff that
01:19showed up in this game his team didn't do enough to help him out and to rally around him in
01:25order for
01:25them to beat a pretty shaky and inconsistent usc team i put a lot of the blame on their underperformance
01:32on arthur smith i mean the big example for the play probably not really making any sense the two-point
01:39conversion the game was on the line you were true freshmen in the game and they called a pass out
01:46of
01:46empty and he backpedaled like on like a nine-step drop it was the weirdest thing they ran for 200
01:52yards i don't know why they didn't run in that circumstance i didn't know why they didn't lean
01:56on the run game more throughout the course that game so yeah it was a very disappointing performance
02:00but i don't think really blame should be assessed to fahey because he wasn't supposed to start he was
02:05never expected to start a lot of it has to do with smith and a lot of it has to
02:08do with a bad situation
02:10that was created with the quarterback room not having a viable sophomore or junior backup that should
02:16have been able to play in the game do you expect this now to be like a snowball effect for
02:20the
02:20the buckeyes and now the season just kind of unravels and they miss the playoffs and everything that
02:24comes with that i'm pretty fearful that it is this week against oregon i don't i think that they've got
02:30a strong chance to win it but oregon looked really good against northwestern so i don't know if they're
02:35suddenly rebounding because riola looked phenomenal he looked like a completely different player after he had
02:41a couple of shaky weeks but where my fear is and where i think the playoff could be missed
02:46is the michigan game at the end of the year and i know that's something that ohio state fans absolutely
02:49hate to hear for the problems that michigan has they have a really really good defense the michigan
02:55defense i'd go as far as say is hair better not significantly a hair better than the ohio state
03:00defense if they had the troubles that they did finishing drives against usc i think that they're going to
03:07have a lot of issues moving the ball against michigan and atomic car has looked a little bit
03:12better not like significantly better but like a little bit better than fahey a little bit more
03:15command and confidence and they're using him well uh in the run game because he's a pretty good athlete
03:19so i don't think it necessarily knocks them out of it but their season's going to be on the line
03:23against michigan at the end of the year all right joe what lesson if that does happen what lesson
03:28does ryan day have to learn from this season for ohio state to get back to being ohio state next
03:34season
03:34well i i think that the assinuating circumstance of not having the ability to control what what
03:41killed you which is julian sand getting hurt they have to have a better contingency plan as their
03:47backup quarterback and i really saw it with how highly touted davian sinclair was that there would be
03:55a inability to transition him in a circumstance like this because it was expected that he eventually
04:01would be the player who took over but he's kind of the the fact that he wasn't ready to go
04:05kind of
04:05makes me think he's the bryce underwood of ohio state where he's got all the tools he's the freak
04:09athlete he's super gifted but doesn't click enough for him to get on the field i think in the future
04:15they need to make sure that they have a good veteran backup that they can trust i look around
04:19the country when these fcs guys enter the portal a lot of teams will go and pull and experience fcs
04:25starter
04:27and you know have that ability to turn to them if something breaks down lsu's perfect example they
04:31have landon clark who was really good at elon they don't need to start landon clark but you can trust
04:37landon clark it's how trinidad chambliss became the thing was hey if something goes wrong we can't play
04:41austin simmons we can turn to trinidad chambliss and you know he turned into a star so they need
04:45they need a better backup plan at quarterback they can't just assume that their quarterback room is good
04:50to go all right joe let's go to the nfl with the browns uh i think a lot of fans
04:54right now are
04:54trying to really figure out the identity of this team and what this team is i think they're very
04:59confused after the loss this last weekend to the steelers are they a good team are they a playoff
05:04team are they just a bad team that is masked as a good like what do you think this browns
05:09team is
05:09in your eyes i think it's still well i read into them every time that we've kind of talked about
05:17them that they had the early season success and they were the top of the division while it was exciting
05:21and it was very promising there were going to be limitations in the first year under todd monkey
05:26and i i know it's really hard when your team has been bad for a while like for for me
05:30as a giants
05:30fan i've been in this in this boat certainly that the minute the things are going your way that you
05:36you buy all the way in the difference for the giants in this circumstance obviously is that they're in
05:40an awful division but because you're in the afc north you're not gonna run the table and sweep a team
05:46like the steelers you're just not going to be able to do that there are going to be instances where
05:51you play great defense shows up watson looks confident that your young playmakers explode
05:56and there's going to be instances like this where you fall flat and there's that not that same level
06:01of pop on offense against the steelers team that appears to be the one of the potential likely
06:07favorites to win the division i think the real lesson here is patience you know not everything needs
06:14to happen in the first year i don't think that it's unreasonable to wait until multiple years of
06:20building and adding pieces and addressing multiple needs before they actually fit their identity and
06:25i think that just overall you need to figure out what that future plan is at quarterback because
06:29i don't think necessarily deshaun watson's been a huge problem for you but you should aspire to have
06:35someone young to build around the team as it continues to grow and progress all right so ben solak
06:41has said a couple things in his seven things for this week and one of them is uh the browns
06:46jets
06:46and vikings should all call the chargers about justin herbert and he also said he doesn't think
06:52herbert's getting moved gotta add that there but from the browns perspective should they rather have
06:59justin herbert going forward or one of the top three quarterbacks from the 2027 quarterback class
07:05i mean if you get herbert i would take him i would get rid of your first round pick and
07:09i would go get
07:10justin herbert because you are as positioned as you possibly could be to compete and to win in 2027
07:19with the right quarterback and i think that monken's shown that he's gotten the most
07:24you know out of the group despite some of the inconsistencies of the offensive line
07:29i i feel like what we're seeing right now is the lack of connection between mcdaniel and herbert
07:35the office the running doesn't fit him i think a lot of the stuff that monken schemes up well would
07:41work really effectively for herbert i think 100 you go all in on on going and getting him first
07:47trading for justin herbert if that if it if the price is too first like ben so like said he
07:52thinks
07:52it would be is that close if they happen today would you think for the browns specifically that
07:57that's closer to being the sauce gardener trade uh to what it was for the colts or the matt stafford
08:02trade for the rams oh that's way closer to the the stafford trade because here's the thing with
08:09the sauce gardener deal it's a corner so you train for a corner an elite corner very good corner at
08:14the
08:14time but for your team to succeed you needed daniel jones to bounce back off of in achilles like there
08:21were so many things that allowed for this cold situation to bottom out you have the
08:27infrastructure when you have the infrastructure to support a quarterback i think it's a lot
08:31different than sending significant capital to add a defensive piece so i think it's far closer to
08:37stafford and this is i brought this up actually like weeks ago on from the betting show that i do
08:42that i don't think it's out of the realm of possibility for it to have a stafford like a
08:48feel to it i don't know if there's a circumstance for the chargers swap him for
08:52a younger quarterback or what happens in that regard but i i think that he needs to change his
08:58scenery just like stafford did where it was just a way it always felt like he was the only thing
09:04keeping him afloat and then it got to a certain point that the situation was so untenable it was
09:08dragging him down to a degree i think that that is an obvious move and the upside is immense because
09:16the talent's there the only way that it blows up your face is if herbert deals with significant
09:21injuries and he hasn't he hasn't really despite getting hurt a lot because they don't protect
09:25them very well he stayed pretty healthy for the most part how does this end for lamar with the
09:29ravens i i'm really starting to wonder what the heck's going on here because here's the funny part
09:35because he's his own agent we're never going to get any glimpse into what's actually happening
09:39with this which is kind of hilarious that he's the arbiter of information for all this stuff and he
09:45doesn't really you know share that with anyone i i feel as though it's the complication of like
09:51needing a restructuring contract that with the with him going down with the injury and missing
09:58most of this year it might be in his interest to look around and see what options are out there
10:04and for the the ravens to do the same to try and move him but i don't know why you
10:08would do that he's
10:09in your best quarterback even better than what flacco was able to produce for you i don't know
10:14why you wouldn't do everything possible to make him happy i understand that it's been frustrating
10:19that his health hasn't been great over the past few seasons but at the same time who are you replacing
10:25him with do you dip into the pool and enter into the pool of quarterbacks in this upcoming class if
10:31there's somebody you feel vindicated and excited about maybe you go down that that rabbit hole but
10:34i don't know why i always don't i never understand why teams would move on from somebody who is
10:40otherworldly talented um and think that it's always going to be brighter on the other side of
10:46whatever the other outcome is i think that they need to do everything possible to keep him happy and
10:51keep him around until the end of his career joe great stuff as always buddy we appreciate you calling
10:56back in have a great week of course thanks guys joe daly on their a to z sports and the
