00:00 Hi there, it has been a dull and in some places damp start to Wednesday.
00:05 Brighter skies are emerging in the north and the west, although those brighter conditions
00:09 will take some time to push east as this low pressure slowly peels away into the near continent.
00:15 Its occluded fronts now weak features but continuing to bring a lot of low cloud to
00:19 eastern parts of the UK through the rest of Wednesday.
00:22 Ridge-ified pressure arrives into the west and then something interesting happens.
00:27 Now, during recent days, weeks and indeed months we've often seen a south shifted jet
00:32 stream and a south shifted track for areas of low pressure.
00:36 But the next low in the queue, well that's moving well to the north on a north shifted
00:40 jet stream.
00:41 So big changes are taking place when you look at the bigger picture.
00:45 Over the next few days with higher pressure starting to build from the south, it's not
00:49 going to be entirely dry everywhere nor is it going to be entirely calm.
00:53 Indeed, the westerly wind will be quite strong at times, that will bring some rain towards
00:58 the north-west in particular.
00:59 But certainly for southern areas it will be drier compared with recent weather.
01:05 Having said that, there is still some rain to talk about for the rest of Wednesday, mainly
01:08 across eastern parts of England.
01:10 That rain of a showery nature and mostly light, but it will continue to pile in from the North
01:16 Sea on a brisk north-easterly breeze.
01:18 Further west, that's where we've got the brighter skies.
01:20 Some sunny spells for Scotland, Northern Ireland, western fringes of England and West Wales.
01:25 Although this line of showers will dangle in from the Irish Sea and that will affect
01:29 parts of Pembrokeshire and Cornwall at times through the day.
01:32 The odd moderate shower possible, but otherwise it's mostly dry and bright towards the north
01:38 and the west.
01:39 Six or seven degrees in the north, nine or ten further south.
01:43 And indeed through the evening, the rain and drizzle in the east tends to peter away, albeit
01:48 rather slowly.
01:50 It will be largely dry by about 11 or 12 I think in the night time.
01:56 And then we've got this travelling clear slot from the west to the east.
02:01 So if you're on the lookout for the Geminids meteor shower, which of course peaks during
02:05 the early hours of Thursday, well you can see the best opportunity is in the early part
02:11 of the night further west and later on further east.
02:15 Under this clear slot there will be a touch of frost, there's a fog patch is forming,
02:20 but any frost and fog will be relatively temporary because the cloud through the night will thicken
02:25 from the west once again.
02:26 Some hill snow for the Highlands and Grampians above about 300 or 400 metres, but otherwise
02:30 it's mostly rain and that rain will lift temperatures as it moves in.
02:35 A chilly start then where we've got those clear skies by the end of the night in the
02:39 south east, 2-3 Celsius bright enough in the far south east and brightening skies for western
02:46 Scotland and Northern Ireland, albeit with some blustery showers moving in on an increasingly
02:52 strong westerly wind that touching gale force in the far north west at times through Thursday.
02:58 So those showers will continue for northern and western Scotland as well as Northern Ireland
03:01 throughout much of Thursday, interspersed by sunny spells.
03:04 And after a damp start across central areas, the cloud and the drizzle pushes into the
03:08 far south east by the afternoon.
03:11 Sunny spells replace the cloud as we go through the day elsewhere and a fine day for many.
03:17 Showery in the north west with a strong wind, yes, dull and damp in the far south east,
03:21 in between plenty of sunny spells and temperatures average in the north, a little above average
03:28 further south and south west.
03:30 Then into the evening we'll see those clear spells once again fairly widely across the
03:34 UK, a touch of frost, some fog patches possible through the night across central and south
03:39 eastern parts but milder conditions because of the breeze further north west.
03:44 And we've got this trend emerging through the next few nights, each night will be milder
03:48 than the last.
03:49 And into the weekend, certainly some very mild nights to come with an increasingly strong
03:53 south westerly breeze.
03:55 It will also be mild by day but I don't think we'll particularly notice that because of
03:59 the breeze and the large amounts of cloud we're expecting.
