00:03I mean, from the Browns' standpoint, or even just from an NFL one,
00:07what's going on, what's happened there at quarterback,
00:10I mean, just the saga continues.
00:11And I want to ask you about sort of your perspective on the crowd Saturday
00:16and, you know, Sanders and Watson.
00:18But from the Bills' standpoint, what were sort of the most important things?
00:24I think the backup quarterbacks, you know, getting more time on task,
00:27figuring out if Kyle Allen, you know, is truly the guy,
00:30which it seems he is, and he played a really fantastic game.
00:33So I think he kind of solidifies that.
00:36Getting the offensive line set communication-wise,
00:39especially because you have a left guard battle.
00:41And I noticed that, you know, even though that the starters rested,
00:44Alec Anderson and Austin Corbett, who are battling for a starting job,
00:47they both played.
00:48So you want to get that, you know, communication piece down
00:51across the offensive line.
00:52And then I think the communication piece on defense,
00:56going from a joint practice to a game,
01:00kind of repping some things you might see
01:01because you're in the joint practice setting
01:03to doing it a little bit more on the fly.
01:05That was important, I think, for Jim Leonard,
01:06listening to him today, that kind of thing.
01:08And then even for Jim Leonard himself,
01:10to be up in the box for this game.
01:12He was on the field for the first game.
01:13There were just operational things
01:15that I thought were important for the Bills.
01:17Do you know from Leonard which he prefers,
01:20the field or the press box?
01:22He said he will, which one will he do this week?
01:26I can't remember what he said.
01:27I think he might do the box again this week
01:29because he's trying to determine.
01:30He might do the field this week, but he hasn't determined yet.
01:32He said today that being up in the box
01:36does give him more of a clear view of everything.
01:38He said you were detached from all the emotion
01:40of the game and players,
01:41but that can be a good thing or a bad thing.
01:44And I know that, you know, as a former player,
01:46he has said before he likes being down on the field
01:48from that respect.
01:49He said the communication went well,
01:51but he has not yet decided
01:52what he thinks is better for the team.
01:54There isn't a third option, is there?
01:56Like, you know, the seats?
01:57The NFL wouldn't allow you to call plays from the seats,

02:02Well, you know, as Marv used to say,
02:04if you start listening to the fans,
02:06soon you're going to be with them.
02:07As much as I respect Marv,
02:09he couldn't have been more wrong.

02:13where the fans were actually right,
02:15fourth down stuff,
02:15and, you know, because, I mean,
02:17to generalize, what is it,
02:20not that you wanted to get into this necessarily,
02:22but what is it the fans would call for
02:24when they were upset with a team's decision?
02:27It was always because it was too conservative.
02:30For sure.
02:31You know, I think you're going to end up
02:32sitting with the fans anyway.
02:34But anyway, so Jim Leonard,
02:37Ryan Paganetti had some interesting research
02:39on coordinators on the field versus in the booth.
02:44And I don't know how pronounced it was
02:47or well-pronounced it was,
02:48but his finding was that
02:51in the booth is better for defense
02:53and on the field is better for offense.
02:55And one, have we talked about this?
02:57And one reason why
02:59is that you want to have,
03:01as an offensive coordinator,
03:03you might more likely want to have conversations
03:07with the quarterback,
03:08even with the linemen,
03:10like on the field,
03:11as opposed to having to do that by phone,
03:13whereas a defensive coach
03:15doesn't need to worry about that
03:16quite to the same extent, he said.
03:19I can totally see that.
03:20I also think that because,
03:23you know, of course,
03:24you might want to call a timeout on defense.
03:26I get that.
03:26But a lot of times the offensive coach,
03:29the coordinator,
03:29if you're down there, the quarterback,
03:31like that's a really
03:32in-the-moment kind of moment, right?
03:34Like call it a timeout,
03:35not seeing that the play clock
03:37is running down, right?
03:38Like you might need that.
03:39A coach on the sidelines
03:41might be needed there.
03:43Now, it might also depend
03:44if you're a head coach
03:45and you're an offensive guy
03:46or a defensive guy,
03:47but I can see that.
03:49Defense, it is interesting.
03:50I thought I saw something
03:51where there was a article written,
03:54maybe Lance Lysowski did it,
03:55I think, from Buffalo News.
03:56And there was a quote from Vance Joseph
03:58about Jim Leonard saying,
04:00like he put him up in the box
04:01halfway through the year last year
04:02and he can make in-game adjustments
04:03in the secondary, like easily.

04:05He's just really good at that.
04:06And I do think being up top
04:08allows you to do that.

04:29would not want to remove themselves from that.

04:32They want to feel that from their players.

04:35you can kind of get
04:36a little bit more of a gauge

04:42who can help you communicate a message

05:45when we talk about third down backs,

05:47catching the ball to the backfield.
05:48Yes, he's good at that,
05:49but he's really good
05:50at the other things
05:51you need on third down
05:52to keep your quarterback protected
05:53and give you outlets.
05:55And I can't imagine
05:56the Bills would swap a rookie
05:58and go away from that

13:25privacy thing
13:26that they'd like
13:27to respect his privacy.
13:29After that happened,
13:30I saw Cameron Wolfe
13:31on the sidelines.
13:33I spoke with him
13:34about our process,
13:36my process,
13:36and said,
13:37you know,
13:37I had known this
13:38for a while
13:39and here's why
13:40I didn't say anything
13:41and I know some
13:42of my colleagues didn't.
13:43And I appreciate
13:44Cam saying to me,
13:45I think you guys
13:46all handled it right.
13:46That's what he said to me.
13:47He said,

13:48And he said,
13:49we wouldn't have either,
13:50but this was out there.
13:52So he said he spoke
13:54with Ed
13:54and he was upset
13:55about how things,
