It took years for Karina to understand her hair, and how to style it. After four years of doing nothing, she’s ready to go pastel blonde for the first time. Her inspiration comes from Latina influencer, Lora Arellano, who continues to express herself through her hair styling and coloring.

00:00When I first started taking care of my hair, the ultimate goal was to dye my hair champagne white.
00:06But I knew that my hair in the condition that it was would never be able to handle that.
00:10Now that I understand my hair in its natural state, I feel like I'm ready to go crazy with it.
00:15Hi, I'm Karina. This is Hair Me Out.
00:17Today I'm going to be dyeing my hair pastel blonde.
00:19When I was a teenager, I just wanted to express myself.
00:24I would dye my own hair. I'd go to the salon and dye my hair.
00:27I'd bleach my own hair, even shave my own head.
00:30It didn't really matter to me. I just wanted to have fun expressing myself.
00:33It took years for me to understand my hair and how to style it.
00:37For the last four years, I didn't even take a hot tool to it, did nothing to it.
00:42Now let's head over to the salon to see the transformation.
00:47I was thinking about doing a pastel blonde or like a platinum blonde.
00:52Have you ever done it before?
00:54No.
00:55This is first time.
00:56Yeah.
00:57Yeah.
00:57Let's get started.
01:04We'll do a bleach process twice.
01:08On top of that, we'll do a color to neutralize the yellow.
01:19Now that I've really nurtured my hair, I'm really nervous about dyeing it, that it's going to
01:24feel really bad or my curls will get lost, all my hard work will get lost.
01:32But at the same time, I'm excited to get rid of this thing that's holding me down.
01:40I don't like feeling attached to my hair.
01:42I don't like feeling attached to my hair.
01:44I don't like feeling like I need to be in service of it at all times.
01:51Even though the health of my hair is really important to me, expressing myself is more important to me.
02:09Everyone's already advising me against dyeing my hair champagne white.
02:14People are scared that my hair will fall out or it won't be as healthy as it is now.
02:33My hair inspiration is Laura Arellano.
02:36She is Latina just like me and she is fearless in dyeing her hair.
02:43You don't see a lot of Latinas dyeing their hair crazy hair colors and Laura really shows you how to
02:49pull it off and that anybody can really dye their hair.
03:04I think I'll still feel nervous even after I see it because I'm going to have to take care of
03:11it.
03:11And from what I hear, it's probably the most high-maintenance thing I can do.
03:19For a really long time, I've put no effort into my appearance.
03:23Always with my hair in a ponytail, minimal makeup.
03:26And I'm really excited to start putting a lot more time to myself.
03:43With a lot of coordination and makeup.
04:01I can see it all the time.
04:01I'm sorry.
04:01I'm sorry.
04:02I'm sorry.
04:03I'm sorry.
04:23Dying my hair in this light, I think it'll give me the freedom to do really bold, exciting
04:27makeup, hair, and jewelry.
04:56Hey, here's the new hair.
04:59Holy, oh my god.
05:03This looks so amazing.
05:06Thank you so much.
05:08You're welcome.
05:13I love the way that my hair turned out.
05:16I'm really excited to start putting a lot more time to myself.
05:26It took years for me to understand my hair and how to style it.
05:32I finally feel like I have control of my hair again.
05:34Let's go.
05:35Let's go.
