00:00My hair journey has just been an emotional rollercoaster.
00:04I never really viewed wigs as an option or an alternative for my hair issues.
00:10Back in the day, it kind of just seemed taboo.
00:12But now, I mean, it's all over Instagram.
00:14I'm hopping on the bandwagon.
00:16Hi, my name is Carly, and today I'm getting a custom wig.
00:19So growing up, I had these luscious, beautiful curls.
00:23Everyone was envious of them.
00:24And as I got older, I burned my hair with straighteners, curlers.
00:29I got perms, I got all these chemical treatments.
00:32What took me all these years to finally accept my own hair, I told myself that I would let
00:38it grow out and just live the natural life.
00:40And then I started experiencing hair loss.
00:45It's a very emotional thing, and it's really taken a toll on my self-esteem.
00:48To have it be falling out, it just feels really unfair and really frustrating.
00:53After nights of crying and crying and, you know, seeing all this hair fall out in the
00:58shower, I am getting a custom wig today.
01:01I'm also very eager to learn just the general tips and tricks for maintaining a wig.
01:06I know that they're expensive, and I am not trying to this up.
01:09I'm just ready to look bomb.
01:13Hey Carly.
01:14Hi.
01:15Okay, so you're ready today to get your custom wig.
01:17Yes.
01:18My name is Daily Green, and I am the owner of H2 Salon Brooklyn.
01:22You have beautiful curly hair.
01:24I love it.
01:24The color is beautiful.
01:26The curl is gorgeous.
01:27What we're going to do first is get you prepped for the wig.
01:30Okay.
01:31And then we'll put the wig on.
01:32Yeee!
01:32I'm so excited!
01:34Yay!
01:36We are going to put her hair into two ponytails and braid them down.
01:41And then after that, we're going to take the two pigtails and crisscross them and pin
01:46them very gently in the back of her head so that she feels comfortable.
01:50I do not like tension, I don't like tightness, and I don't think for her hair texture that
01:55there needs to be this braid down that needs to happen.
01:58I also want her to be able to take it off and take her hair out and wash it and
02:04then
02:04put it back in when she wants to do it again.
02:07How I got into making custom wigs was this was about 10 years ago.
02:11There were a lot of women transitioning out of relaxers into curly hair.
02:15And instead of doing weaves, I thought a safer approach would be to do a wig.
02:20Easy enough.
02:21And now all your hair is pretty flat and it's close to your head.
02:24Okay.
02:25You look really good.
02:26Cool.
02:27But you want, remember those clips that kind of bring back when you were little?
02:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:31You can use those too.
02:32I can do this.
02:32Yeah.
02:33It's easy.
02:33Pretty easy, right?
02:34Yeah.
02:35I made a wig for Carly and I colored it for her.
02:38We are going to put the wig onto Carly's head.
02:41Here is your custom wig.
02:43It's beautiful!
02:43I'm so excited.
02:45The texture matching are purple.
02:46Perfect.
02:47What I want you to do is take both of your fingers at the temples of your head.
02:51Okay.
02:52So you're going to kind of hold this with the tip of your finger and I'm going to pull this
02:55back.
02:56So I didn't put a wig cap on you only because wig caps are a little bit warm and hot.
03:01And also too, I feel like they're made out of a synthetic material nylon.
03:04And so it's like wearing a pair of pantyhose on your head all day.
03:07And I feel like the tension from that rubbing can take away your hairline.
03:12Yeah, we don't need that.
03:13No.
03:14So this is just the lace base.
03:16I'm going to cut the wig and frame her face so that it really looks like it's her hair.
03:21One of the most important aspects of getting a wig is getting it cut to fit the person's
03:27face and their style.
03:29Sometimes wigs come and they're too long.
03:31Sometimes wigs come and they're too heavy in the front.
03:34So it's important to really have a bespoke wig experience and curtail it to the need of
03:39the client.
03:40After it's been cut, I'm going to take the wig off of her.
03:43I'm going to wet it down.
03:48I'm going to dry it under the dryer on its own.
03:52And then once it's completely dry, I'm going to put the wig back onto Carly's head.
03:58I'm going to style it curly so that it looks just like her hair.
04:04And she's all done.
04:06Okay.
04:06Are you ready for this?
04:07I am.
04:08I'm so excited for you.
04:09Okay.
04:09Let me turn you around.
04:11Oh my God.
04:15It's so natural.
04:16Like it looks like my hair.
04:18It really does.
04:18It's beautiful.
04:21It has all the volume that I don't have anymore and I want it.
04:25How do you feel about the color?
04:27It's beautiful.
04:28Okay.
04:28You know, my hair is damaged and I don't want to put color in it.
04:31So this is perfect.
04:33It looks like I was sun-kissed.
04:34Good.
04:35It's gorgeous.
04:36When wearing a wig, I think that it's important to take care of your hair underneath.
04:39Carly is a beautiful young woman who is experiencing hair loss.
04:43And I do understand that it is a personal issue that she has to grapple with every single day.
04:49So doing this wig for her has been very pleasurable for me.
04:53And I'm so excited that we found texture that matches hers and enhances what she already has.
04:59It looks like me.
05:00It is me.
05:01It's beautiful.
05:04My face is pretty sweet.
05:06I'm
05:06your favorite hair or ginger.
05:06You're so excited.
