00:00We got Red Wing tickets to give away this hour on the show.
00:03Be listening.
00:04You're going to want to listen for Mickey Redmond's bobblehead saying,
00:08Holy mackerel.
00:09When you hear that, you win a pair of tickets.
00:11You got to call in and then you got to be the right caller.
00:14Greg's going to get you a pair of tickets to go to the game against the St.
00:18Louis Blues.
00:18That's the Halloween game at Little Caesars Arena for tickets and game info.
00:22NHL.com slash Red Wings.
00:24Got the cookie jar coming up at 735.
00:26We will get back into the Dylan Larkin conversation as well.
00:30We're talking Lions right now.
00:31Right.
00:32And my point was, there are a lot of trades that happen that you like the whole Zedaria Smith one.
00:39Like there was a lot of conversation, not just here, but in Cleveland about players that they could ship out.
00:46And it was never Miles Garrett.
00:48It was always Zedaria Smith.
00:49And it was some other guys that were good players, get a good return, but they don't need them.
00:54And they, they try to need to, uh, they need to be able to accumulate draft picks.
00:58But then you have moments where all of a sudden you wake up one day and Sauce Gardner is traded.
01:04You wake up one day and I know there was, there was conversation about Micah Parsons, but all of a
01:09sudden he's going to Green Bay.
01:11Miles Garrett.
01:13Nobody thought that was possible until it happened.
01:16Quentin Nelson.
01:17No one thought that was going to happen until it did.
01:20Like there are surprise trades.
01:22So my point is to what God was saying.
01:25Do you think Brad Holmes would ever give up two first rounds for any player?
01:32And I don't know that he hasn't made those calls.
01:35I don't know that he has.
01:36I think at reputation, you would say he probably is not making those calls.
01:40But what if you, you looked and you said, okay, well, who could possibly be selling?
01:45Houston?
01:46Mm-hmm.
01:47Would it be out of the realm of possibilities to think that if you were going to overpay, like I
01:52think the Bears did for Jeffrey Simmons, that you give two first round picks for a Derek Stingley Jr.?
01:56Go for it.
01:58I mean, that, that to me would be one where you woke up and you're like, well, holy cow.
02:02But nobody thought that that was possible.
02:04Just like Sauce being traded.
02:06Nobody thought that was possible.
02:07A text in the same vein says, Quinion Mitchell.
02:10Eagles in a free fall.
02:12Yeah.
02:12High-end corner, plays man coverage, very good man coverage corner.
02:15But the point is, Brad, Brad isn't a guy you trust to make those moves.
02:20It's not sustainable.
02:21We're here for sustained success.
02:23The other thing with the first round picks is you're good.
02:26It's not as valuable a first pick.
02:28Let's take the Bears, for example.
02:30Let's say the Bears next two drafts are what the line, where the Lions picked the last two drafts.
02:35Okay.
02:36That they were 9-8 team and a 15-2.
02:38Maybe not that.
02:39Right.
02:39But the Lions picked 17th and 26th is my point.
02:42The Bears' picks will probably be better than that both years.
02:45Maybe one of them.
02:46I mean, who knows what happens with injuries.
02:47Would you trade Tyleek Williams and Blake Miller for Jeffrey Simmons?
02:53I mean, come on.
02:55But here's the other thing.
02:56What are we doing here?
02:57Capital's overrated.
02:58What the Bears are doing?
03:00They're pushing their chips to the table, to the front of the table, right to the middle.
03:04Because right now, they are, depending on which website you look at, next year's cap, $40 million over the cap.
03:14They're going to have to work some magic next year.
03:18They may lose some players next year.
03:20And on the horizon, what are they going to have to do as well?
03:23Pay their quarterback.
03:23Pay their quarterback north of $60 million per season.
03:27But my point is, those are next year's problems.
03:31Those are problems two years down the road.
03:33They have said, we've got an opportunity with a cheap quarterback.
03:38And we have put together, in this division, a team that we believe can win.
03:43We've got the coach we think can win.
03:45So we're pushing all our chips to the center of the table right now.
03:48And I would go as far as to say, we think about the cap cliff.
03:51Teams have shown us over the years, they can not avoid it, but they can extend it longer than we
03:56realize.
03:57So like, I know there's the thought, well, they only have a year or two before the cap cliff.
04:01Well, it might be another year or two after that before they actually feel the repercussions of it.
04:06And they're okay with saying, well, yeah, let's take three, four cracks at this with the very best roster possible.
04:11And then we'll live with whatever happens.
04:13Right.
04:14And part of the other reason why they had to give up two first is because it's not an expiring
04:18contract.
04:18Right.
04:19That's the other benefit for them.
04:20Yeah.
04:21It's next year, though.
04:23That's my point.
04:25They've been over 500 teams for four straight seasons.
04:28And we're still worrying about next year.
04:29Yeah, this team won 12 games, nine twice.
04:34Yeah.
04:34And a 15.
04:35Yeah.
04:36And they haven't pushed.
04:37They've won multiple playoff games in that time, multiple divisions in that time.
04:41And yet, where is the push?
04:42The Bears are in the Lions 23-24 window right now.
04:46They're not even paying their quarterback yet.
04:47Right.
04:48Right.
04:48And so that's my point of, okay, we didn't hear the news about these other big trades until they actually
04:54happened.
04:54Nobody thought that sauce was even on the market.
04:58So, give Houston a call and say, hey, what would it take for us to get Derek Stingley Jr.?
05:04Yeah.
05:05And they may say, you know, hey, he's not for sale.
05:08Like, there's no price.
05:09Well, that's how this Simmons thing started.
05:10Right.
05:11If you read some of the backstory on that, it was, at some point, the offer was too good to
05:15refuse, and Tennessee said yes.
05:17So, it's the same thing.
05:19And I understand, hey, they freed up $30 million in cap space.
05:22They want to be able to roll that over to pay their own guys.
05:24At some point, just like the Bears are doing, just like Seattle is doing again, you're going to have to
05:33say, we'll deal with the pain in two or three or four years for the opportunity.
05:41There's no guarantee that you win a Super Bowl, but for the opportunity to go win one.
05:44I want to stress, too, that, you know, there's a belief that Brad's doing it the right way.
05:49Even if you, quote, do it the right way, your all-pro safety has a generative knee issue.
05:54Right.
05:54You know, your stud interior defensive lineman blows his ACL and misses a year, right?
06:00Parts of two seasons.
06:01You can do it, quote, the right way and not take the risks, and the risks will find you anyway.
06:09The idea that you can just roll the helmet out every year and eventually you're going to win a Super
06:14Bowl is not how the league works.
06:16And on top of that, something that I talked to you guys about pre-show, I sent it last night
06:20in my prep, is Jared Goff having the best year of his career?
06:25He's had some good years, and I think there's still good years to come, but is he having currently the
06:31best year of his career?
06:33Yeah.
06:34So why not capitalize on that?
06:36Like, there's a lot of context that goes into why you would make a move right now.
06:41Text says, Brad Holmes enjoys draft day more than he enjoys Sundays.
06:46To Holmes, don't make a move just to make a move.
06:49Add depth.
06:50Make a move that makes a difference.
06:53I think the names we're all talking about are guys that'll start and make a difference on this team.
06:57Sure, yeah.
06:58Zadarius had four sacks in eight games and then retired.
07:00That's his biggest accomplishment?
07:02Really?
07:02Stop acting like it was a home run.
07:05It was a guy on an expiring contract.
07:09He produced?
07:10He produced.
07:11Like, it was a need.
07:13Like, I don't want...
07:16I want to make sure that we at least acknowledge that at the trade deadline,
07:22he went out and filled a need.
07:25Quinion Mitchell feels like a name no one's saying for the right price could be dealt.
07:29The real question is, how much did the Lions like Quinion Mitchell two years ago?
07:33Was he their guy, but they had to settle for Arnold?
07:35That could be a dark horse for the Lions to go give up a first plus.
07:39Sure.
07:39They didn't trade up until Mitchell went.
07:41Right.
07:43Lions should be willing to part with a late first for a corner.
07:4599.9%.
07:46They're going to use that pick on an unknown corner commodity anyway.
07:49Could risk another Terry on Arnold 2.0.
07:51Yeah, that's the other thing.
07:51You could say we're doing it the right way, and you draft Terry on Arnold.
07:55Right.
07:56There is no excuse, guys.
07:58We like the guys in the room right now is a problem.
08:01Brad thinks our team is good, and we don't need to make any moves.
08:04Sean and Algonac.
08:06Now, my only defense of him and not making a big move,
08:09if they sit back and they genuinely believe that the move won't make them a Super Bowl contender,
08:15I could buy that.
08:17I could buy that maybe they're building this more for next year.
08:21This is still a retool to a degree that the offensive line will be better next year.
08:27But to me, look, I'm being a devil's advocate here to a degree.
08:30You don't know if Laporta's on the team next year.
08:32Well, I say that's the thing.
08:34You got to push.
08:35You got this last play schedule.
08:37You're going to be in this division race.
08:38I hate the we're not one player away radio.
08:41You know how you get one player away?
08:43By adding good players along the way.
08:46And if the argument is we're not a player away,
08:48you think the Bears are one player from definitively planning the Super Bowl parade?
08:51No.
08:52No.
08:52They didn't stop them from trying to get better.
08:54You know what I'm saying?
08:55Like, go down the list of teams that have made the moves.
08:57When Howie Roseman added A.J. Brown,
08:59did that definitively make the Philadelphia Eagles a Super Bowl team, champions?
09:03No.
09:04They weren't, quote, one player away, but they did it anyway.
09:07So if Brad goes, well, I just don't think we're one player away.
09:10Well, get one player away.
09:11Get closer.
09:12Add people.
09:13Make yourself a team that we think maybe could win this division.
09:16Maybe come in Monday feeling bold about that.
09:18Win the division and then actually do something about it.
09:21Not just be a team that gets in and gets bounced.
09:22They made the A.J. Brown move because they knew they needed a big receiver
09:26opposite of Devontae Smith to open him up deep,
09:29which was one of the critical plays in their Super Bowl win against the Kansas City Chiefs.
09:34I say this, too.
09:35Look at the timeline of how things went down this week.
09:37I don't think Ryan Poles makes this trade yesterday if DeForest Buckner didn't go to the Niners.
09:42I think he saw.
09:44They think they're a contender.
09:45Yeah, he's right.
09:46One of our top contenders in the conference just added Buckner.
09:49Guess what?
09:50We need to go do the same.
09:51Yep.
09:52It's an arms race.
09:542-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
09:56We do want to talk more about the Lions and the Vikings matchup itself.
09:59You know, Tom, you've called this a referendum game for the Lions offensive line.
10:03I agree with you.
10:04I actually think it's a big narrative game for both sides.
10:07There is this belief that Minnesota isn't this good, despite the fact that they're undefeated,
10:11right?
10:12Like, John doesn't have him number one in his power surge.
10:14I've said the bubble's going to burst.
10:15Ross Tucker made a similar comment with us yesterday.
10:18Big game for the Vikings narrative.
10:20Big game for the narrative for Jared Goff.
10:21You want to be an MVP?
10:23You want to announce your candidacy?
10:25You go up against the number one defense in football that's going to blitz you and test
10:29you and torch them, and you make them pay repeatedly and beat them?
10:33You are absolutely in that MVP conversation.
10:37It's a huge narrative game.
10:38You know, Detroit didn't win either matchup a year ago.
10:42They had a losing record in the division a year ago.
10:44A chance to start 2-0 in this division and make a real case to win it?
10:48It's a huge narrative game.
10:49And it's all for Jared Goff within the parameters and confines of the offense.
10:55The ability to hand the ball off, play action pass, beat the blitz, all of those things.
11:00It might not be as sexy, but if you beat Minnesota and you find a way to torch their defense,
11:06it changes the narrative of everything surrounding Jared Goff.
11:11Got the cookie jar coming up at 735.
11:13Some Halloween questions in there.
11:15Dylan Larkin, big news.
11:17Suspended by the team.
11:18He is refusing to play.
11:20Okay, well, this really has been a race to the bottom.
11:23We're going to get more of that talk in the mix later in the hour.
11:26It's 97.1.
