00:25Holly Rowe working the sidelines. We'll check in with her shortly.
00:41And the Bulls headed for the ball and we are ready for action.
00:50On the move from inside is 5. He'll be stopped short of a 20-yard line on the return.
00:56They'll mark him at the 19. The Owls' offense will have the football first.
01:01And we expect to call this guy's name pretty often. Here's Peter Clark.
01:05They say the tight end's always open and he seems to always be and he's always making big plays.
01:17Quick game. It's Smith. Turning it on.
01:23They'll get it to the 48. No need to measure. It's a first down.
01:28And busting big runs like this, we always talk about the running backs, but it's the big boys up front
01:33paving their lanes.
01:35Those receivers glue it on those DBs that make these plays really go for big yardage.
01:40And how about those receivers? Not just the glamour of catching passes, but doing some dirty work too.
01:45No doubt. When they get on those guys in the second level and get on those DBs, that's when you
01:50break those big, long runs.
01:52He's to throw. It's Shepard. Still looking. He'll pull it down. Open space at the 25.
02:00Now he's got it all the way down to the 21-yard line and they are threatening on first down.
02:07And the Owls come to the line with a new set of downs.
02:11Sells the run. Lost a pass. Blast it as he lets it go.
02:16They'll get it down to the 10-yard line on that completion.
02:20The offense knocking on the door. First and goal.
02:27Wide receiver going in motion.
02:31Run in the red zone. It's Mason.
02:34He's brought down at the 6, but the defense feeling the heat to make a stop here.
02:40They keep pushing forward. Now back to work on 2nd and goal from the 6th.
02:49The run up the middle. Trying to find his way to the goal line.
02:53Could not find a hole. This defense clogging up everything. It's third and goal.
03:00Trying to pick up a first down.
03:06Off play action.
03:09Perfect timing on the hit to keep it from making the grab and the defense forces a 4th down.
03:15They'll play it safe and try for 3.
03:18And this one ought to be nice and easy. A 22-yard attempt.
03:23Smashes it between the uprights.
03:25And with that, they break the seal on the scoring. It's 3-0.
03:29I know one thing this head coach does every week is he challenges his guys to start fast.
03:35And it's so important today, playing on the road in this kind of environment.
03:39You saw a nice drive.
03:40They didn't get the touchdown they would have loved.
03:42But still, kicking that full goal and taking this early lead, that's a statement for the visiting team.
03:49So, USF's offense coming on the field, and we'll get our first look at them in this one.
03:54And here comes Michael Van Buren.
03:56The erstwhile LSU runner came over in the portal.
03:59They're putting the fortunes of this offense into his hands.
04:03And I can just tell you, man, just by watching the tape of this dude at the quarterback spot, I
04:07don't like it.
04:08And I say that, I don't like it from a defensive perspective.
04:10Because he's just got so much speed.
04:13He can put so much stress on a defense, and it's just one guy, break one tackle, can take into
04:19the house, Palmer.
04:20It's a rare combination of what this guy can do.
04:23He can just take off in the blink and kill defenses.
04:26Must be nice, because I have no idea what it feels like.
04:29But to be able to run that fast, the stress of defense, that's got to feel pretty good.
04:34At least if you're on offense, right?
04:36Because not only do you have to focus on our running back, and not only do you have to focus
04:39on all of our weapons on the perimeter.
04:41Because this guy can throw and hurt you as well, but you're right.
04:44If he makes you miss, and he gets into second level, this dude is gone.
04:50Tells the play fake, wants to throw on first down.
04:53He rifles one deep down the middle.
04:56Upstairs to make the catch.
04:58Stop at the three, but that'll be enough to give them a first and goal.
05:03Well, you can see the effect that last run play had on the defense.
05:07They had a really good-looking run, and all of a sudden, they come back with play action.
05:11Everybody bites.
05:12They play downhill, and it opens up a guy up top for the offense.
05:16Really nice job setting up that shot play to get an explosive one through the air.
05:21And he can't find his man in the end zone as he was trying to pay off this red zone
05:25chance.
05:27And I think on that last play, that's an example of the quarterback trying to predetermine who he wants to
05:32throw to.
05:33Instead of letting the defense dictate who gets the ball, man coverage, that guy was...
05:38He's in to the end zone.
05:41Touchdown, South Florida!
05:46They'll try to add another to their lead.
05:51And the extra point makes it 7-3.
05:54A very efficient five-play scoring drive.
05:58And close the deal with a three-yard touchdown run.
06:07He'll take the return and try to improve the field position.
06:11He's got great speed.
06:15Just barely able to stop him.
06:17He almost housed that baby.
06:19The nice return there.
06:21That last line of coverage is the only thing that stopped him from scoring.

06:31Can't quite make the connection there.
06:33Might have let him a little too much.
06:35They don't need a bunch on second down.

06:47And he'll step across the sidelines after making a good gain on that one.

07:54And a lot of times if you break a few tackles, it could be even bigger.

08:47After one quarter of play, let's take a look and see how these running backs are doing.
09:00They've switched in to the field, and we're ready to get things started here in the second.

09:14Out wide left, it's Bermudez.
09:17Now the connection takes it to the 11.
09:20These third downs are so critical in deciding the outcomes of football games,
09:25especially when you start to get closer to the end zone.
09:28You drill it.
09:28You practice it.
09:30This offense needs to be dialed in, needs to be in rhythm, and needs to execute on this third down.
09:34Back to the line of scrimmage, and that is it.
09:38It'll be fourth down.
09:41They're going to stay aggressive and leave the offense out there on fourth down again.
09:48Looking for the marker.
09:51Not going to make it, and the fourth down gamble backfires.
09:57Man, what a job keeping your eyes on your key.
09:59It's so easy sometimes when they run those RPOs to get a little bit lost with your eyes to come

10:07He's got his guy, makes the tackle, and gets the big fourth down stop.

11:19You want to make sure to maximize those types of runs, and he gets it out to the 41.
11:25That's a really nice play.
11:27It's impressive.
11:27Runs first down, and the defense thinks you might be running the football.
11:30You still can line up.
11:31You can get some movement at the point of attack and find a little crease for your running back.
11:36He's going to let it go.
11:39And it slips through his fingers.

11:42That would have been a huge gain if he could have squeezed it.
11:46They've got a good chunk of ground to cover on third and long from the 41.
11:54He's got the tight end.
11:56Breaks into the open.
11:58Steered out of bounds at about the 36-yard line.
12:01A big pickup, and they are threatening.
12:05Come on, defense.
12:06What are we doing?
12:07I mean, you can't miss this guy.
12:08He's like literally the biggest dude on the field.
12:11That time, completely wide open.
12:13That's way too easy for the offense.
12:15He caught the football.
12:16There was nobody even near him.
12:18Someone on defense has to locate this guy.
12:20They've got to communicate to each other if they're passing off in coverage.
12:24You can't let that guy be that wide open.
12:26And the Bulls go back to work after moving the chains through the air.
12:31Ripping off a good chunk inside the 25, and they're set up for the first down.
12:37Really put an offensive possession together here that's fun to watch.
12:40It's fun to watch them own the line of scrimmage, be physical.
12:43In this area of the field, this is what they call the fringe.
12:45It's right outside the red zone.
12:47It's kind of your last opportunity to take shots.
12:50Take advantage of the extended space on the field before you get cramped in the red zone.
12:55So I look for this offense to be aggressive.
12:57Second and wrong here.
13:06Selling the fake.
13:08Bying time to his right.
13:10He can't make the connection.
13:11It'll be incomplete.
13:13He can scramble, but couldn't create anything there.
13:16Well, nice job by the defense here in back-to-back plays.
13:19Two straight incompletions.
13:21You've given up some yards, and the opponent's in field goal range.
13:23This is a place a lot of them.
13:25Here comes the rush, and they've got him wrapped up at the 28.
13:29And on fourth down, they'll try to salvage the drive with a field goal.
13:37No good.
13:39Guys, after the miss, still up by four.
13:43And sometimes I just feel like fourth down, man.
13:45Just go for it every time.
13:46Like, the field goal, miss, make, rate.
13:49And listen, kickers have improved the last couple of years, but you left some points off the scoreboard there.
13:54Temple takes over, and the offense will return to the field.
13:57But they've got it back after that last drive stalled out, and they were stopped on fourth down, David.
14:03Yeah, and they put a little bit of a drive together, but Jesse, they stalled on the other side of
14:07the field,
14:07and they've got to find a way to keep that momentum going as they get closer to the end zone.

14:12I do like their mindset, though, and I think they need to continue being aggressive moving forward in this game.

14:38It'll be a gain of six.
14:40That's up second and four.
14:42And the Owls can really attack on this second and short.

15:21When you're on defense and you get to play outside linebacker,
15:23it's about as good as he gets, right?
15:25I get to rush the passer just like this and put him on the ground.
15:28Then I get to cover in space.
15:30I get to move all over the place.
15:31Great job by the outside linebacker.
15:33The most fun position to play in college football.
15:37He gets the first one off and he was busier than he hoped
15:40in that loss last week, being called on five times.
15:43He'll get it to about the 25 before they put a stop to the return.
15:49The Bulls offense comes out ready to go to work.
15:52The drive starts from their own 25-yard line.
15:56You want to talk about taking the wind out of your sails,
15:59drive the ball down the field, and miss the field goal, David.
16:02You know what?
16:03Don't leave it up to kickers.
16:04Execute better offensively.
16:05I think you move the ball nice, you've got to keep that in mind.
16:08But Palmer, I think you've got to stay aggressive and don't settle for field goals.
16:12Yeah, because you've got to know there's just no margin for error right now.
16:15You've just got to be able to execute at a higher level.
16:20Bryant's his big tight end.
16:22They're able to get him stopped just shy of the first down marker.
16:27Now they missed a field goal on the last drive, but you need to get points here.
16:32So they need to pick up some yardage to at least get in range for their kicker.
16:36The Bulls use their first timeout.
16:39They'll have two left to work with before the half.
16:43And these third downs obviously are so crucial.
16:46That's why you call them the money down.
16:47But just to get the drive started, man.
16:49You get the third down, you get a little bit nervous.
16:51Nice job executing, running the football, moving the sticks, and now keeping this drive moving.

17:00On the run, deep down the right side.
17:03And just not enough field to hold that one.
17:06It's incomplete.
17:07This is going to be a tough situation for the offense here.
17:10Late in the first half, they're trying to find a way to generate some points before going into the locker
17:15room.
17:15But the defense is ready for it.
17:16So the windows are not going to be very big.
17:19Especially when you're trying to attack vertically like they did on that last one.
17:24Downfield completions are going to be tough to come by.
17:26The Bulls come to the line with a fresh set of downs thanks to that last connection in the passing
17:31game.
17:34In the backfield, it's Isaac.
17:36And he was knocked down immediately.
17:38Very short pickup on that one.

17:45And they'll still have one in their pocket for what's left in this first half.

19:29Here are now some other games you may have interest in.

19:39And a lot of coaches will say limiting the big plays and maybe hitting on a few yourself is key.
19:45But I'm more of a move the chains guy.
19:48Give me efficiency every day of the week and twice on Saturday.
19:52The offensive unit that subscribes to the less is more philosophy might be the one that leaves here today with
19:59a big fat W.
20:01And with that, let's send it back to the guys inside Raymond James Stadium.
20:11The Owls will try to kick this one deep to get things underway in the second half.
20:19From inside his own 15, looking for a crevice.
20:24Tackled and brought down at the 23-yard line.
20:27So not a whole lot of room on that return.
20:35He'll start the third quarter with the run.
20:37Got enough for the first down.
20:39Really good job to pick up a chunk of yardage and get it out to the 39-yard line.
20:46In halftime in this locker room, there's a lot of positive things to talk about.
20:49You got the lead.
20:50But you know what else will be positive, Palmer?
20:52Get the running game going early in the second half.
20:55You're absolutely right here.
20:56And I think this coaching staff is going to try to put this game on the offensive line a little
20:59bit.
20:59Let these guys take this thing over, be physical, and push this defense around.
21:05And it's going to be interesting to watch this defense, man.
21:07Because obviously when you're trailing, and offenses can sometimes get conservative.
21:11That's two runs back-to-back.
21:13Do they get more aggressive and try to bring more guys near the line of scrimmage?
21:17Not let them waste time and try to get their offense the football back.
21:21And he was drilled just as he released the pass.
21:24It's incomplete.
21:26Another incompletion, and I've said that a lot.
21:29And these teams are just struggling.
21:31I mean, the offense just doesn't know what to do.
21:34Nothing's working.
21:35Ground game, throw game.
21:36It's kind of been a rock fight on both sides.

21:42And it slips through his fingers.
21:45Incomplete.
21:45That would have been a huge game if he could have held on.
21:49And the Bulls decide to punt it away.
21:52Finally sending out a punter in this one.
21:55Got to make sure they earn their letter.
21:56And the punt hits at the six.
21:58And they can't down it, and it'll be a touchback.
22:02Temple takes over, and the Owls send the offense back onto the field.
22:06So they get the ball back after the defense forces a punt.
22:09And I'm sure they tried to make some adjustments at halftime after a little bit of a rocky first half.
22:14And the Owls trying to find their way forward after the big loss on the last play.
22:23Looking downfield, it's Shepard.
22:25Makes the grab.
22:26Nowhere to go, and not much to show for that one.
22:30I think quarterback, dropping back, understanding.
22:33I'm getting zone coverage.
22:34All I got to do is be a little bit patient.
22:36Manipulate that defense a little bit.
22:38My wide receiver runs that drag, and I get the first down.
22:42Here comes the heat.
22:44Just gets rid of it to the running back underneath.
22:47They make the stop about four yards short of the first down.
22:52Temple lining up to punt it away.
22:54He can get this one up in the wind.
22:56It ought to carry for a while.
22:58And the punt goes out of bounds.
23:00We'll check the spot.
23:01Think they'll have it right around the 40-yard line.
23:04South Florida has it back, and the Bulls offense will return to the field.
23:09They haven't really been able to line up this scoreboard,
23:12but putting points up would be huge here.
23:15And he's brought down after a short game.
23:18Now, what's the closest guy to the football, man?
23:21It's those defensive tackles, and those guards and centers have to work together.
23:24They've got to get those guys and get some movement.
23:27They don't on this play, and the big fella looking deep.
23:33And this is dropped.
23:35Incomplete pass.
23:36He had a huge game in his fingers, and he couldn't hold on.
23:40Let's see what they find in the playbook for third and long from the 43.
23:45They're all over it.
23:47And he was hit just as he released it, and it falls to the turf.
23:51The Bulls will punt this one away.
23:53This will be the second time they've had to kick it away.
24:01They're going to field this one in tight quarters.
24:04He's able to kick his way for just a bit, but he'll be stopped at the 18.
24:08Good job by the punt team.
24:10The Temple offense heads out to start this drive.
24:13And points have been hard to come by in this one.
24:16They'll try to put together a drive.
24:19A little more space.
24:20Open up that playbook even more as they pick up the first down out to the 30.
24:26Here's this offense with a fresh set of downs.
24:35Right down the middle.
24:37Between the hashes, it's Bermudez.
24:40He's stopped right at the 50-yard live.
24:42And they'll move the chains.

24:45New set of downs after the completion.
24:51Keeping it on the ground inside.

24:54Stopped in the backfield, and that'll be a loss of two.
24:58A lot of ground to cover, and they need a chunk here on second down.

25:05Extending the play.
25:07Able to get just a few before sliding to avoid the hits.
25:11It's just so nice to have a QB under center nowadays in football.
25:15You can trust these guys.
25:16You put so much on their plate.
25:18And you tell them, go get positive yards when it's there.
25:20And a lot of these guys are such great athletes, they do it with ease.
25:24Snags it.
25:26He gets it to the 38-yard line, and they'll pick up a fresh set of downs.
25:31This offense hasn't found the end zone yet.
25:34Starting to move.
25:35It's first and ten.
25:38Sells the run.
25:39Wants to pass.
25:40Unloads to the right.
25:41Got a wide open receiver.
25:44Touchdown Temple.
25:46He broke away from the defense, and they couldn't catch it.
25:50And that's what I think makes this tight end so dynamic.
25:53He's so dangerous once he has the ball in his hands.
25:56There's so many tight ends out there that are just possession guys,
25:58and they usually go down right after they catch the ball.
26:01This guy has the ability with his speed to make people miss,
26:05and he showed it to you right there on that touchdown again.
26:09And the extra point was good.
26:11No incident there, and we are tied up in the third.
26:13So that scoring drive took only six plays,
26:17and they pay it off with a strike from 38 yards out.
26:24He'll bring it back from inside his spot.
26:27Makes a move.
26:30He's on the loose.
26:32And there he goes.
26:35He'll take it to the house.
26:37Touchdown USF.
26:41Touchdown USF.
26:46Climbing up to tack one more onto that lead.
26:51And the extra point is true, and they're on top by seven.
26:55That's the kind of play that energizes the entire team.

28:51They're trying to wear this defense down when the game is almost over.

29:39And this guy really has been a worm horse today.
29:42He's made plays when his offense has needed them the most.
29:45He's a guy who's reliable.

33:24And when you're down later in the football game, you've got to start taking some chances,
33:27and that was a beautiful run blitz.
33:29He does great job playing the probability, understanding it might be a run to run some clock,
33:34and they guess right, and they make a big play for this defense.
33:38He'll make a play on third down.
33:41He's got enough for the first as they mark it at the 32.
33:45The Bulls come to the line with a new set of downs.
33:49Smart move to keep it on the ground.
33:52Finding a way to put that foot in the ground and get it up to the 37-yard line.
33:57When the offense can run the football and you can feature a guy like this
34:01that will get more yards than this block that you can really depend on,
34:05hangs on to the football, like, it makes offense super easy, special.
34:09Here comes the rush, and they've got it wrapped up at the 28.
34:14You know, this is a very well-rounded defensive line.
34:17They play this 4-3 scheme.
34:18They've got guys up front that keep their gap integrity against the run,
34:22but they can also win one-on-one against the pass.
34:25And you just saw the speed off the edge by that D-end.
34:28Finds the big tight end.
34:30The defense uses a timeout. That's their first.
34:34They still have a couple of timeouts to work with in this final quarter.
34:39And the Bulls are moving quickly down the field.
34:44Again.
34:45Oh, he's got some space.
34:47Really putting together a threat now.

35:38What a good job to be able to pick up that kind of yardage
35:42when you're trying to finish off the game.
35:45And the Bulls pounded the rock to move the sticks.
35:48Now back to work.
35:49Two-minute timeout arrives,
35:51and this defense desperately needs to get the football back.
36:02Inside the 25, he'll snap it from the 24.

36:09Hit and dropped, and he got nothing on first down.

37:56And you practice the two-minute drill all week long,
37:59and you dream about making those big plays,
38:01and how about this defense coming up big,
38:04shutting down this offense.
38:05The offense has a chance to go make this a game,
38:08maybe go win the football game.
38:09And the defense does their job, does their part,
38:12makes the big safety,
38:14and now receiving the football and putting one nail in the coffin.
38:18Searching for space.
38:26They'll crank up this drive from the 30-yard line.
38:32Keeps it on the ground.
38:35Good pickup on the ground,
38:37and they'll mark him down at the 39.
38:40Really nice job stopping the run,
38:42but the problem is you have zero timeouts left.
38:45Cannot stop the clock right now if you're the defense,
38:48so this has got to be excruciating for them.
38:50They know the offense is just going to take their time
38:53before they snap the ball.
39:09They'll run him again.
39:11Gets it to the 42-yard line,
39:14and that's a first down.
39:22A strong, methodical, workmanlike effort from this team.
39:27No thrills, just get the job done and get the win.
39:30I love when you describe my teams like that,
39:33just consistent, you know, methodical, strong.
39:36I don't have to do things special every single week.
39:38All I'm supposed to do is get the W, and that's what they did.
39:42And this is why practice is so important, guys.
39:44You can tell that this team was locked in way back earlier in the week.
39:49They watched the film.
39:50They got good looks in practice.
39:52They knew what to anticipate.
39:53They knew what looks they were going to see.
39:56And when those looks presented themselves,
39:58boy, oh boy, did they ever take advantage.
