00:00Nathan Segura here on the Wiseheart, right? We make it right. Call Kyle Wright hotline.
00:05Nathan, welcome back to yet another Browns Victory Monday.
00:09That's the best. Let's keep that going. This team is resilient. This team is a lot of fun.
00:14And I think this was a game where we kind of got a taste of maybe what this team can
00:19be on offense.
00:20In this case, it's probably true that it is both a quarterback stat and a receiver stat
00:23because Casey was exceptional. Harold Fannin was exceptional after the catch,
00:27but the quarterback puts it on him in good spots and they're able to do that.
00:30But one of the things we talked about that made Casey Concepcion so special in college
00:34was what he could do with the ball in his hands.
00:36And I thought they did a great job exploiting that a safety would often be with him
00:40in the middle of the field, getting him the ball there.
00:42They did a good job on getting the ball in the run game, getting him the ball in the screen
00:45game.
00:46And Casey Concepcion had one of those, you know, an all-time game.
00:49You've got rookies that have had eight catches or more, 120 yards or more,
00:53in the first half of the game in their rookie season.
00:55It's Casey Concepcion and then Odell Beckham Jr. did it with the New York Giants back in 2014.
01:00So pretty good company to be in.
01:02He was awesome.
01:03You know, between – and that's what's fun is you saw this,
01:06and I'm going to just list off some names.
01:08Denzel Boston, Casey Concepcion, Harold Fannin, Quinshawn Judkins, Dylan Sampson,
01:13all are in their first or second year in the National Football League.
01:17I mean, that's incredible.
01:19Not to mention Austin Barber, not to mention Spencer Fano on the line being rookies as well.
01:23There's a lot of young, exciting talent on this offense.
01:27Nathan, what did you see out of Deshaun in his first 300-yard passing performance as a Browns player?
01:33I thought it was one of his better games throwing the football.
01:35I mean, I think we all know now that the interception was not his fault.
01:39And when you're a young receiver, you've still, no matter what, on those double slants,
01:43you've got to cross the face of the defensive back.
01:45But I thought he bounced back from that.
01:46He made great throws.
01:47Those throws for 308 yards was highly accurate.
01:50And in fact, had Casey caught that other one, his numbers look even better.
01:55And you probably had a long touchdown to the mix as well.
01:57I thought he played very well.
01:58I thought he was decisive in the pocket.
01:59I thought our offensive line also did a great job.
02:02I think that they need to be acknowledged.
02:04There's a reason we ran for 183 yards.
02:06This is a game where we went three yards down the field on average or more before we took contact.
02:11It had been at or behind the line of scrimmage on average early in the season.
02:15And then Deshaun Watson was stacked one time for zero yards.
02:18They did a great job.
02:19The pockets that they gave him were excellent.
02:21They held up very well.
02:23And you hope that this is a sign of things to come.
02:25I take us through the goal line stand because I think that was one of the, not only game changing,
02:30but really at the end of it, when you look at the score, it's like you won because you were
02:33able to get three straight stops when it mattered the most, Nathan.
02:36Yeah, it was massive.
02:37And that really was, I think you're, I think that was a big turning point in the game.
02:41I think that was as big as anything that happened in that game from a, from a Cleveland Browns standpoint.
02:47And, you know, you get the stop on the play action, you get the stop on the sneak.
02:53And then, you know, Jared Burst crashes down, Hickman flies in and you get the stop there.
02:57And that was kind of an attitude.
02:59That was a word.
03:00You're not going to out physical us anymore.
03:02Your day, the days of, you know, Tony Pollard, as he did early in the game, just running down the
03:05field on us.
03:06That's over.
03:07And they stopped it.
03:08And I thought that was as important as anything that they did in that game.
03:12Really, I thought that was tremendous, tremendous by the Browns defense and really kind of turned the tide in that
03:19game.
03:20So, obviously a lot of positives from yesterday, but the first two drives defensively were touchdowns for Tennessee.
03:28What was going on in those first two drives?
03:31And what did they clean up to then obviously have a very nice next three quarters of football?
03:36If we've got to figure that out, that's the million-dollar question, why they can't start quicker on defense.
03:40You think going back to the Steelers game, the Steelers scored on their opening drive.
03:45Then you go the very next week, the Jets score on their opening drive.
03:48The Ravens score on their opening drive.
03:49The Titans score on their two opening drives.
03:51And the Titans were not eight.
03:52The Titans, the Browns are the worst first quarter team in the league.
03:54The Titans have been the worst first half team in the NFL.
03:56And they still figured out a way to, you know, go down and get those touchdowns.
04:02So, there's something you've got to give on defense, but they're resilient.
04:05You get the Denzel Ward pick.
04:06You get Tyson Campbell bailing out the special teams unit after they had 12 guys on the field when Joey
04:11Sly was going to have to come out and punt.
04:12So, they've done a great job creating turnovers when they need to, just being physical and making plays.
04:18But, yeah, that's the one thing you'd say, man, what would it look like this year?
04:22What would this team look like if they could start a little bit better in the first quarter?
04:25And I would say, really, the good news is you're 5-2.
04:28The only game that might have changed if you started a little bit earlier was the Jets game.
04:31Maybe you're at 6-1, but you're still at 5-2, and that's awesome.
04:34Yeah, what do you take away when, you know, you get this Browns team and they don't have a single
04:38win over four points?
04:39And it's just all these games, all these wins are just incredibly close.
04:42One-score games every single game and the fourth-quarter comebacks.
04:46When you see that, what do you think is happening that has Munkin and this team able to close out
04:51these games in a way that we just hadn't seen previously?
04:55Well, first of all, first of all, it is a tough situation.
04:59The league's tough, right?
05:00It is a very difficult league, the National Football League.
05:04And so you don't always have the opportunities to do, you know, to get these blowouts.
05:08They're not easy.
05:10You know, when you have teams, for example, this week, the Texans were 10-point favorites against the Giants, and
05:14they lost.
05:1510-point favorites.
05:16That's a huge spread in the National Football League.
05:19A couple weeks ago, the Rams were 12-point favorites, and they lost to the Arizona Cardinals in a game
05:23in which the Cardinals didn't even score a touchdown.
05:25It's hard in the NFL to get blowouts.
05:28Now, I do think in this one, in case he caught that pass, you go up 10 early in the
05:31third quarter, maybe this is one that you're able to kind of run away from.
05:34But the reality is, a lot of games in the NFL are one-score games.
05:38This team's been resilient.
05:39This team is a team that just knows how to win right now.
05:43And that's a valuable skill for young teams to develop, because the majority of games in the NFL are going
05:49to come down to a few plays here or there, and often in the third or fourth quarters.
05:52Nathan, Spencer Fano was the highest-rated Browns offensive player, according to PFF.
05:58I think it was a 92.5 grader, somewhere in there.
06:02What did you see out of the Utah great, now seven games into his NFL career against the Titans?
06:09Yeah, he played great at one of his better games, and I talked to him, his movement skills on full
06:12display, getting him out in front of some of those plays, like the swing out to Dylan Sampson was awesome.
06:17And, yeah, he played great.
06:18The highest grade, as you mentioned, really neutralized their pass rush in one-on-one situations.
06:22You go back and watch the tape of Quinshawn's second touchdown.
06:24He's the one who blocks Jeffrey Simmons and literally takes him out of that play on a down block and
06:29does a great job.
06:30So, Spencer Fano is really settling in, and it's been great to see.
06:34You know, it's interesting, and one of the numbers that have come out was the time to throw for Deshaun
06:39Watson in this game.
06:40And Jeffrey Simmons talked about it after the game, like, what do you guys want me to do?
06:42When he gets rid of the ball this quick, there's nothing really I can take care of.
06:46Is that one of the reasons why you feel like Deshaun did win this job to start off the season?
06:51Not obviously the sole reason, but his ability to get rid of the ball as quick as he's able to?
06:56Well, and this was also a different kind of defense.
06:58You know, this was a defense that was going to rush forward, drop seven.
07:00They played a ton of zone.
07:01They weren't blitzing as much as some of the other teams.
07:04They weren't into those exotics where they were getting free runners.
07:06So, this was a little bit of an easier defense for us to play against.
07:09And I think when we've seen all the things we've seen through six games,
07:12it makes it a lot easier when you have a team that doesn't subscribe to some of those theories.
07:17Now, I think we're also in a much better position to deal with it going forward,
07:19and we'll get that opportunity against the Steelers this week,
07:22although they don't blitz as much as, say, the Ravens do or as much as the Bucs did or Carolina
07:26or the Jets.
07:29So, it's a little different, but I think that it's – and also this line's starting to gel a little
07:32bit.
07:33Again, I like to reference Greg Cosell because you guys watch more film than I think anybody on planet Earth,
07:37and I mean that with all sincerity.
07:39You know, offensive lines, when he goes to these offensive line camps and talks to the greats
07:42and the great offensive line coaches, they don't talk about individuals.
07:45They talk about cohesion, and that takes time.
07:47And I think we're starting to see this offensive line get some cohesion,
07:50and that was a great reason and a great performance.
07:53Nathan, you mentioned the Steelers game.
07:55This would be another great opportunity to take a step forward, get to 6-2.
08:00I can't expect it, but we're hoping for it.
08:02What's the key to beating another good team like the Steelers twice in just over a month?
08:11Take care of the football.
08:13Be better, you know, than the Steelers.
08:15And it's a team you've beaten.
08:16It's a team that for a time it looked like you were going to beat handily in that game.
08:20They made it close at the end.
08:21So they're coming back from Paris.
08:23Teams have not done well flying back across the pond.
08:25Just go out there and take care of business.
08:27Be who you are.
08:28Play for 60 minutes.
08:29Let's get off to a faster start.
08:30I think that's critically important on the road where we all know it's been far too long
08:34since we've beaten the Steelers in the regular season there.
08:36So I think those are the keys.
08:38Get off to that fast start.
08:39Go out there.
08:39Make some plays.
08:40Take care of your business.
08:41And let's go get a win.
08:42Get to 6-2 and be in first.
08:44Nathan, going back to the game quickly,
08:47Nick and I have been going back and forth about who the MVP of that game was.
08:49If you only give out one game ball, essentially,
08:51we both chose Casey Concepcion.
08:53Is that your guy for yesterday, or would you choose somebody else?
08:56I just think you could give a lot.
08:58I gave on Brownsdale with Joe Thomas, I gave out my game ball to the offensive line
09:02because when you run for 183 yards and you get passed for 308 and you get sacked once,
09:07the guys up front deserve a lot of credit.
09:09But you could give it to Casey Concepcion.
09:10You could give it to Harold Fannin.
09:12You could give it to the running back tandem of Quinshawn Judkins and Dylan Sampson.
09:15You could give it to Deshaun Watson.
09:17You could give a game ball to Denzel Ward because that interception was such a massive play in the game
09:21at that time.
09:21You could give it to Andre Schmidt, who even though he wasn't perfect, was perfect when he needed to be
09:25the most.
09:26There are so many people you could give game balls to, and that's what's fun about this team
09:29and what's fun about where we are right now, and we got to enjoy it
09:32and hopefully keep it going next week against the Steelers.
09:35Hopefully, indeed, let's get another win there.
09:38I just would like to beat the Steelers twice in a row there.
09:41I know nothing upsets the Yenzers more than losing to the Browns once.
09:46Getting them twice might be the thing.
09:49Yes, it would be fantastic, and I can't wait.
09:53And hopefully we see that Sunday by 4 o'clock that the Cleveland Browns have swept the Steelers
09:58for the first time in far too long.
09:59Nathan, great stuff, buddy.
10:00Appreciate you.
10:01Talk to you hopefully again another Victory Monday next week.
10:05All right, you got it, guys.
