Nineteen ninety-four, over the Pacific, surrounded by cardboard boxes of books and papers. That was the whole room for a week. The man running the largest software company alive removed himself from it twice a year to do nothing but read. It looked like indulgence. It was the opposite. Nobody defends thinking time by accident. He had to book the week, block the calendar, and disappear from the thing he built so he could see it clearly. Most men wait for free time to think. Free time never comes. The ones who think clearly took the week by force, put a wall around it, and made it immovable before anyone could fill it for them. That is the whole mechanism. Not inspiration, not willpower. A calendar block nobody is allowed to touch.
