Before the crane moves, he walks the whole lift standing still in the dirt. Load, swing path, the pinch point, the call he makes if the wind picks up. Nobody on that crew has ever seen him wing it.
His daughter has never seen him do anything else either. She comes home crying about a girl at school and he is already talking, already running the conversation the same way he runs a lift. Two minutes in the parking lot before he turns the key. He never pictured one second of it before it started, and it shows.
The tool is process visualization. A beam does not move until he has seen the whole lift play out in his head. Neither does the hard conversation. He gets two minutes in a parked car to walk it the same way, pinch points and all, before he carries it through the front door.
His daughter gets whatever he has when he walks in. He decided a long time ago what that would be.
